Are amp cases worth the price?

I've been cruising EBay for a few weeks checking out ATA Flight cases for my new Orange head and 4x12.. the head case looks like it will run around $120 after shipping, and the 4x12 case looks like it will run around $350 after shipping.

Are these good investments if a band is playing out pretty regularly (not touring or anything, though), or just more of something that's nice to have, but not completely necessary?

YES. I have one for my bassman, its the reason it hasn't gotten any cosmetic flaws since it was taken out of a church attic.

One thing you might consider, my case was custom made so that you don't ever have to take the head off.... there's some foam cut out inside so that the head can rest on the cab inside the case. Gives you even less chance of accidently screwing something up. Of course, my head screws down to the cab with thumbscrews, if your's doesn't i'm not sure how well that would work. Just a suggestion, though.

Nice but not really necessary unless you're touring. Depends on your tolerance level I guess.

Maybe for some... not for me.

I might use one for my head, but I bet I could find a lot more use out of $500.

Re: Are amp cases worth the price?

i think they're a good thing to have for heads, seeing as how much stuff is in there that can get damaged if it gets banged up. i bought one for my single recto, and i'm glad i have it because i can recall a few situations where something would probably have broken if it hadn't been in the case.

4x12's can handle lotttts of abuse, and unless you're in a touring band i wouldn't suggest spending all that money on it unless you're THAT worried about the cosmetic condition of it.

i don't know orange amps so well, but all that's on the back of a recto head protecting the tubes is a single metal bar. i don't know if the back of your amp is so open like this, but i was always afraid of a mic stand or a cymbal stand sneaking in there when we throw everything in our trailer, and shattering my power tubes. a head case is definitely a good investment.

Re: Are amp cases worth the price?

it was a generic brand that was on ebay, i believe it was made by something like Angstrom cases (i'll double check that in a minute).

EDIT: yeah, the company is called Angstrom cases. if you're looking for a case for a mesa, the easiest way to find it would be to hit up ebay and type in "mesa ATA case" or for a marshall, "marshall ATA case", and...you get the point:rolleyes: :p

Yeah, I've seen those before, just wondering if that's what you were talking about. Thanks :).
