Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

Money does play a factor since I would not be buying the head and cab myself, so I'm looking for something that will work for under $2000. Is that remotely possible?? If money wasnt ann issue I would buy myself a solid state and/or JCM or maybe a plexi. plus who knows what else. I'm leaning towards that JCM I posted ealier, I'm not familiar with Solid state amps at all.
For $2000 you could easily buy a used Marshall JVM410H (which is an amazing amp), and a used Marshall 1960A or 1960B cabinet. That is, if you live in the U.S. or somewhere that's not off the beaten path. I've got $1900 invested in that JVM410H full stack that my cat in on top of. I bought all of it used.

This is what it sounds like on one of the channels. I didn't even really EQ it either. I just put everything on 7.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

Dang, that sounded really cool. What's the between a JVM a JCM? and was that with a 4x10 or 4x12 cab????
Thanks. That was with a Marshall 1960 4x12 cabinet. The JVM is just waaaaay more versatile. It has four different channels, and each of those channels has three different modes. Basically, it's like having 12 different amps in one. A lot of people are afraid of them because of all of the knobs, but there's really nothing to using the amp. It's rather simple. With the JCM 800, you're pretty much stuck with a clean channel and a distorted channel. With the JCM 800, you'll most likely need an overdrive or distortion pedal to push it into the territory that you want it. The JVM on its own has waaay more gain than just about anyone would ever need.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I think for now a JCM is the best option because I already use pedals to get the high gain sounds. The Vox I use now has a lot of channels and presets and I only use the default clean channel. I just feel like a JVM would be overkill for me.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I do see some applications when I would leave the pedals behind, life if i was meeting the band after school and did not want to carry them around with me.

Be sure and watch that video on the link I posted. It'll show you all that you need to know.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

Marshall amps suck.

I will purchase every old marshall from forum members for 5 bucks each so thry dont have to deal with them any longer.

You are very welcome.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

This may sound strange but it almost never feels right when I'm playing without the pedals, like something is missing.

There are pedal players and non or limited pedal users. Being your a pedal user, a 2203/2204 is an very good and proven platform for that. The 50 watt plexi reissue is as well.

The JCM2000 DSL50 green channel ( both modes) is also a well known good pedal platform.

As for plexis being paint peelers with the volume on 2, this is caused by the stock bright caps in most cases which makes the volume controls behave kind of like on/off switches. By having a lower value bright cap installed, or the stock one clipped, you get a much more even sweep of the volume knob. With pedals you don't need to play it at unreasonable volume levels.

For a plexi you need G12M Greenback speakers for the best tones, and because they are not quite as loud as say Vintage 30s (Vintage 30s are great with high gain channel switching amps though). The stock speakers in a standard late model 1960 4x12 cab are G12T75s. I recommend against those with any of the amps (including the Orange) your considering, but you may like them.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I found a nice 50w 2203 plexi 1987x reissue on eBay. And also a 1986 JCM 800, these are my two top choices I have found so far. Also are used cabs a good bargain against a brand new one? I'm looking at a 1960a Marshall.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I agree; Marshall amps suck. I'll purchase every ancient Marshall from forum members for 5 bucks and let JeffB have the old ones.

Unless you can crank it so the walls shudder where you play it, you'll need some way of attenuating that puppy (attenuator, slaving, etc).

...unless you're looking for Dave Matthews Band tone.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

You're jumping the gun. Don't think about mods until you've actually sat down and got a feel for the amp over quite a period of time. We can tell you all about Marshalls all day, but you're still just going to have to go out, play some, and see which ones you like.
