Are Marshall amps still good??

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

Also are used cabs a good bargain against a brand new one? I'm looking at a 1960a Marshall.

The advantage of a used cab is that the speakers are more likely broke in. New speakers sound harsh and ice picky until they break in, and that can take quite awhile.

The 1960A cab will be loaded with G12T75s unless they have been replaced or if the cab is older than the year 1986. G12M Greenbacks would preferable with either of those amp heads.

If I was to buy a brand new 4x12, I would get the EVH because of the Heritage Greenback speakers it comes loaded with.

You can can also get Marshall cabs with the regular re-issue Greenbacks.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

Same here. If I spent over a grand on a head I don't want to spend that much on a cab. But wouldn't you have to find someone to install the speakers for you?

I'm just afraid I would fudge it up and wast the money. Maybe it would turn into a new hobby, just like figuring out pickup soldering

Is this something similar to what you were saying?, lake placid blues?

Yeah, you can get several Marshall cabs with GBs stock. That is the extra tall model intended for JTM45s. There's a 70's style cab (1960AX) and also one in the current cosmetics. There are just not that many out there. And I would not pay that much either. By far most of the used cab's out there are G12T75 loaded though. The second most common Marshall cab on the used market is probably the 1960AV (1960B is a bottom or straight front) or Vintage cab. These are loaded with Vintage 30s -at least originally. Always pull the back off a used cab and confirm exactly what your dealing with.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

Just go find a used regular 1960 (preferably B) cab. Don't worry about the greenback thing right now. Your going to pay twice the price and from the other thread I understand your a younger dude just starting out with your first stack.

I bought a 1960B cab for $350 once and I can find them all day for $450-500 locally. Wish I would have kept that cab but donating it to a new venue (for the musicians by the musicians) seemed like a great idea at the time...which is was, and still is, but I'm also down a cab haha.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I'm leaning towards a rockerverb 50w at the moment, woult a 1960b cab work well with the orange head???

It'd work, but it probably wouldn't sound the best. Orange loads their cabs with Vintage 30s, and their amps are probably voiced to sound best with those speakers. My Marshall Jubilee and Mesa Rectifiers for example sound FAR better with Vintage 30s than they do with T75s.

Re: Are Marshall amps still good??

I tried many amps and bought a JVM. An incredibly versatile amp. Its greatest strength is the classic Marshall overdrive madness, but it's also got very nice clean and high gain sounds. Not sure it's the best for modern 8-string death metal or for country, but it has that sweet upper-mid-heavy Marshall bite and is great for a lot of things. Playing clean, blues, Slayer and Mayhem with it. It's great. To each his own, for me it's Marshall and the JVM delivers. If you're looking for classic rock/metal sound, you can't go wrong with a proper Marshall.
