Tele vs Strat vs LP
Tele vs Strat vs LP
Although I don't own an LP or a Strat, I've tried out an awful lot of them when I was looking for guitars, and each time I picked a different one up I had the same impressions. My feelings are that LPs are a little 'heavy-handed' for me and not subtle enough for my tastes. They're awesome rock 'n roll axes, but I don't feel they can do much outside of that. As far as strats go I've only found one I liked playing (a double-fat with Pearly Gates in it), and even then its tone sounded like everyone else but not like 'me'.
I needed something that didn't sound like everyone else's tone. I tried out tons of other guitars as well, but none grabbed me except for a Reverend I played at a retail shop, leftover from when they were available in retail. They later put it on sale to get it out of their stock, but it was sold when I went back to buy it and I didn't want to pay full price online + shipping. So several years later I managed to get my hands on a Fender Aerodyne Telecaster- great sustain (I'm not kidding!), and the P-90 in the neck makes it richer than a telecaster while retaining that cool metallic ring that teles are known for. Because Fender is so ubiquitous I always resisted them, but the fit, the look (black on black on black), and- most importantly- the sound of this guitar was different from everything else! I was hooked.
But if you asked me this question 10 years ago, I would have thought that a telecaster was a wussy guitar and it needed to crunch crunch crunch. That's the beauty of guitars- so many different options, so many different tones, and a different guitar really does make you play differently! So back to Dr. Barlo's point- listen to your bandmates. If they're saying your playing is best on the LP, stick with it. On the Tele's first practice my drummer told me halfway through that he loved the way that guitar sounded so I'm sticking with it.
