Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Tele vs Strat vs LP

Tele vs Strat vs LP

Although I don't own an LP or a Strat, I've tried out an awful lot of them when I was looking for guitars, and each time I picked a different one up I had the same impressions. My feelings are that LPs are a little 'heavy-handed' for me and not subtle enough for my tastes. They're awesome rock 'n roll axes, but I don't feel they can do much outside of that. As far as strats go I've only found one I liked playing (a double-fat with Pearly Gates in it), and even then its tone sounded like everyone else but not like 'me'.

I needed something that didn't sound like everyone else's tone. I tried out tons of other guitars as well, but none grabbed me except for a Reverend I played at a retail shop, leftover from when they were available in retail. They later put it on sale to get it out of their stock, but it was sold when I went back to buy it and I didn't want to pay full price online + shipping. So several years later I managed to get my hands on a Fender Aerodyne Telecaster- great sustain (I'm not kidding!), and the P-90 in the neck makes it richer than a telecaster while retaining that cool metallic ring that teles are known for. Because Fender is so ubiquitous I always resisted them, but the fit, the look (black on black on black), and- most importantly- the sound of this guitar was different from everything else! I was hooked.

But if you asked me this question 10 years ago, I would have thought that a telecaster was a wussy guitar and it needed to crunch crunch crunch. That's the beauty of guitars- so many different options, so many different tones, and a different guitar really does make you play differently! So back to Dr. Barlo's point- listen to your bandmates. If they're saying your playing is best on the LP, stick with it. On the Tele's first practice my drummer told me halfway through that he loved the way that guitar sounded so I'm sticking with it.

Ya, Les pauls just seem real. Once you find "the one" then thats the only one you need. Dr. Barlo, what pickups do you have in that paul?

Sorry, I did not see it. They are timbuckers (Wound by Tim White). Check the LPF for more on them.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Ok guys we all agree here, so no problems at all.

I wasn't clear enough sorry! The issue isn't whether you carry a particular LP or a strat or whatever... It is more a question of what guitar resides in your heart.

Imagine that you could have only one guitar forever. (Just like Rory Gallagher using a 61 strat in almost all his electric songs (I dunno whether or not he used others, so would appreciate the input here).) What would that be?

And Don't think of covers. When you do your own song (can be any style, anyway all of those guitars are great in covering lotsa ground), which guitar would that be? That is what I meant.

I tend to pickup my LP much more, and am aware that the tone I'd hear in my head while driving, cooking etc is a LP. And it looks like that somehow comes through in my playing. I dunno how I dunno why?

I mean the way LP speaks to me is like my mother language, you see? Whereas teles strats are like foreign languages that I speak and love dearly.

I love my Tele.

I love my Strat.

My Les Paul and my guitars with humbuckers sit in the darkness, the lids to thier cases tightly closed, hoping for a little attention someday... :yell: ...they rarely get played. Sob...sniff...

That's a really beautiful way to put it, Doc.

I guess I'm a Rickenbacker 12 string guy then, but I have a 335, LP, Strat, and Tele and I can make them all sound crappy. :)

The Rick just seems like home to me, as specific and non-versatile as it is. I guess it comes from wanting to be in a band mostly from seeing REM so many times when they first started out.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

For me, it's all about variety. I don't really have any allegiance to a particular brand. I really don't like Gibsons, I just feel like they aren't built in a way that makes them worth what they cost. PRS's are nice, but I think there are guitars that are every bit as good that cost much less (Hamer.) I like Strat style guitars, but not stock Fenders. That's why I decided to put one together from parts, so that I could get it exactly the way I want it. I find that Strat necks are too narrow and thin for my tastes. Thanks to Warmoth, that won't be a problem with my Strat project. Neck issues aside, Strats are very comfortable to play. I don't know if most of them have the forearm and tummy contours like the '97 American Strat body I have, but it's the most comfortable guitar I've tried. Those contours make a huge difference. It's also lighter than my other two guitars. My Wolfgang is a great guitar. The neck is the fastest of any guitar I've ever played, and the Floyd is nice to have for certain things. It doesn't sound shrill or thin like some Floyd guitars can. I would have to say my favorite guitar is my Hamer Studio. I really like the shorter scale length, combined with the wider, medium-thick neck. I find that I can play quickly and comfortably on that neck. It's a finished neck, so it's not quite as fast as my Wolfgang's neck, but it's the fastest finished neck I've played. I guess if I had to pick one guitar to play for the rest of my life, it would be my Hamer.

I'm a tele guy-definitely a bolt-on single coil guy. Just can't get over that chimey/bubbly spank that LPs lack.

I'd take an LP but it ain't high on my list...

Thanks.

Now that is a language that I cannot speak! :D BTW I like REM!

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

I guess I'm a Strat guy too . . . although, veering from convention, my favorite would be a dual-humbucker hardtail. :)

So . . . maybe I'm not a Strat guy. :smack:

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Les-Pauls!
Have had strats and Ibanez guitars but once I managed to get my first Paul I was hooked.
99% of my heroes play / played them - they look awesome, they sound awesome and they play awesomely.
I always have a 2nd LP at a gig in case I pop a string on the main paul!

Les Paul & Strat.
I need both :D They stand proudly next to each other. I love my LP, but I wouldnt get rid of the Strat.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

This Owl is an SG-type bird to the core!

I also have a fondness for ES-335 type axes (more for recording, I do find them awkward to hold onstage) I just LOVE that midrange honk!

I like Strat's for a change of pace, especially for blusier, funkier stuff (and I love those shimmery chords you can get from them).

LP's have great tone but man, they are MURDER on your shoulder!

Tele's I don't much care for, just too twangy and harsh for me.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

I sit on the 50 yard line between Les Pauls and Strats. The funny thing is that in bands, it's either one or the other. When playing with more instruments in the mix, I feel at home on a strat. In my current situation, where I'm the only guitar player and have to sound big, I take 2 LP's and 1 McCarty. Then I'll come home and play nothing but my strat and Martin. I'm a LP, Strat, McCarty, Martin, Tele, 'other guitars'
guy, in THAT order. Ha Ha.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

I'm definitely a P-bass guy. And when I play guitar, it's a Strat. Fender is my home.

I've gone through a Les Paul phase and I love them.... I've gone through a Jackson and Ibanez phase.... the operative word here being "phase". No matter what I play, I always loved Fender the most and I've always gone back to them. They're just everything I want and nothing I don't. I'm dyed in the wool.

I love the "mother tongue" analogy. That's really saying something. :)

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

I normally take only 2 guitars to any gig. 1) '76 Les Paul Custom and 2) '95 MIM Bastardcaster Tele. Having said that, my "wife" is a 1979 SG Standard that I "retired" in 1988. Invariably, when I record, I keep Gretchen handy. She works for so many different situations. But, she's no good for me live. I'm a bit rough on instruments, and she just can't take that abuse anymore. So, I guess I'm an SG man that likes Les Pauls but uses Teles because they're annoyingly addictive.

I'm a Tele man all the way. I'll use it for everything I can. Since it has a minihumbucker in the neck and a Strat pickup in the middle, I can cover a ot of bases; but not as much as my Variax... :)

You've got to be the first individual that I've found that actually uses a Variax. I've played the things and I thought the sounds were reeeeeally cool, but thought the guitar played like a cheap Dano. Did you do any work to it after you got it? What are you running it through? Tell all!

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

I LOOOVE my SG. I have a Strat, which is ok for some applications, a Blueshawk, which is nice sometimes too, but the SG just really fits me so well. Only a few guitars I have ever played have felt as natural to me as my SG. One being an LP Custom, one being a Custom 22. (and I still think I'd give my SG the edge over the PRS)

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

i really don't know, not been playing for long enough. In guitars ive favoured its always been 25.5" scale satin maple finished bolt ons. Shorter scale necks and my fingers feel restricted (me has big hands!). Maybe its a case of me getting used to others. I love the explorer shape, i find it comfortable, is great live and i feel its the shape that calls me!

That said ive found ways to be attracted to almost any shape.
