Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

...A strat is always my main instrument...I can cover every single tune our band does with a strat and I find the Gibson instruments to be a bit limiting...You can't do "Sultans of Swing" and get it to sound right on a les PAUL..After a strat for me,every other axe becomes a secondary instrument...When I say the Gibson instrument is a bit limiting,I just mean that it doesn't quite hit the mark in getting me the variety of tones the strat can...

This is really interesting as I have 3 Lesters and 1 strat, and I find the same, but opposite, issues. I need my strat for some songs (Superstition, by SRV for example), but 90% or more of my stuff is played on my Les Pauls as I find th strats too limiting...great for the classic 'strat quack', but beyond that I'm not a big fan...just my opinion of course - I just found it interesting that our views were identical, but from opposite perspectives...

I think it's because you get used to whatever you play most. The guys that claim to not be able to play a certain guitar, have just never bonded with one. It's hard to say what electrics I don't like, but I feel at home on LPs, all Fenders, and even guitars like my G&L Invader, which has a Floyd. It only takes a few days to love any good guitar you put in your hands. To the guys that can't seem to bond with LP's.......
make sure you play a LP that's been setup properly and has pickups that DO allow you to enjoy it. If I judged LP's by the ones that I play in stores or other guys own, I wouldn't care much for them either. They come with high-cut nuts and pickups that sound like a punch to the forehead. Set it up with "Jackson Action", put some nice Duncans in it, and I guarantee you'll like it as much as your strat.

GJ, soo right!

Last week a buddy of mine has been complaining of his rosewood neck alder body tele. He said his was real thin, real icepicky bla bla bla even with the JD that I installed for him. I mean he heard mine and went for it to get rid off his thin bridge tone.

Mine (hardash body maple neck) on paper should be brighter you know. I told him to bring his guitar over, which he did. It turned out that he could not use the strings I setup his guitar with (0.11-0.52) and was using a standard 09 set. His efforts were not good enough to eliminate consequent buzzing. And hell yeah the guitar sounds so icepicky, because the stings cannot vibrate.

I raised the action (kept his strings altho still I believe 09s are too wimpy, but anyways) booom instant thick JD tone!

Setup is a must! Judging a guitar without proper setup is not fair at all.

I'm a "Super Strat" guy, ie, I love the Strat shape, bolt-on necks, humbucker in the bridge, and a "floating" Floyd Rose Tremolo.

+1

they rock!!

I'm a PRS guy !!!

I need a wide fat neck , 22 frets , loaded with low output Duncans and that's it .

Of course , I sometimes play my LPs , teles , strats ... about my Hamers and Music Man I almost never play them ! :grumble:

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

My Les Paul is a workhorse! She does anything I ask of her and comes back for more. (unlike most of the women I've known!) :smack:

I play my Stratacoustic on only 3 or 4 songs during a gig.

Terry loves a Tele !!! :13:

And a LP Goldtop w/P90s!!!

And a Brian Moore C-55 w/twin humbuckers!!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :burnout:

I agree with GJ... with the exception of extreme cases (ie. guitar too heavy, necks to small), the major factor is bonding with the instrument!

I have heard something along the lines of, the more you make phsyical contact, touching, with someone - you're creating more of a bond with that person.

I believe the same applies for guitars, in most cases, you can train yourself for anything.

That being said, on the other side of the coin, as much as I understand the extreme significance of the Tele, Strat and Les Paul... I much prefer a Super Strat with a floating Floyd for their fast necks and high-output sound, as Ben and Jim have pointed out. Too bad I don't own one (one with a Floyd anyway).

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Humbucker strat man here. The feel of a strat with a humbucker for a big sound that aint like a gibson is the way for me.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Les Paul for me, it just feels like home. I enjoy playing my Strat but can't imagine playing a whole gig with it, like I do with a LP.

I don't think traditional (SSS) Strats are more versatile than Les Pauls. They're just different. Some of the hybrids (HSS Strats, PRSs etc) are more versatile, but they just don't appeal to me. Growing up in the 70s worshipping guys who played Les Pauls (and Strats too) probably has something to do with it and I don't deny I love the image of the Les Paul, but I love playing them too, love the layout and instantly know where to find my sounds.

I'd love to add a Tele and an SG to the family. I had one of each years ago and should never have sold them. They are both great guitars. When I was out looking for a new guitar last year I played a lot of each.

Then I bought another Les Paul. :D

My shoulder hurts. :smack:

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Definitely Telecaster. It took my band and my Praise band members a long time to get used to the Albert Lee guitar. Strats? I don't even other. I used to have a Les Paul Deluxe that was a mainstay for me when I played in a Blues band. It's been Teles for quite a while now though...

Doc,

Beautiful Honey Burst!

When I was playing gigs regularly, I always had 2 guitars with me to break things up a bit. Generally I would switch between a LP and an SG. If I were to play today, it would be the same, even though I have a beautiful Strat that my daughters gave me. I find I'ld have to play the Strat a lot to get really comfortable with it.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

thanks for bringing this one back up here, i didn't reply the first time. but i am stuck in between two kinds of guitars, single cutaways like an lp or tele (yes i know a tele is really a double cutaway with the little bit cut away from above the neck) i go back and forth between the teles and my bluesbird. i sound like myself with both of them, it just depends on what sound i want, nice antiquity single coil smooth but still jumpy or humbuckers that have a bit more output and a bit more presence, or back to a tele that has some brighter edgier pickups. the strat just doesn't get played anymore. i should really sell it and keep the neck antiquity for a tele.

I still wanna hear from the guy that uses the Variaxe!

Cool!

Guys by the way I, personally, was not talking about versality or ergonomics and all. As we talked on the first page the following sort of summarizes how I feel:

I mean the way LP speaks to me is like my mother language, you see? Whereas teles strats are like foreign languages that I speak and love dearly.

Re: Are you a Tele/Strat/LP/SG/PRS/... guy gal?

Well, I have ALL the guitars you mentioned, so I guess my answer is YES. I have read many posts in the past..... "If you had to have just one guitar"..... Well I can't do it. So I have narrowed it down to a few "must haves"
1. My Strat(s) I have an EC Strat, and a 57 RI
2. My 335..... This is my first choice when I need a HB tone
3. My LP. I have a Standard,
4. My SG Standard. for slide and a few other things
5. 52 RI Tele. When I need to twang I can (I also have a Tele with a strat neck PUP)
Then I have my Acoustics also!!!
