As Far As Practicing Goes...

Re: As Far As Practicing Goes...

Ironically enough , their song “Changes” came on the radio today.
It’s just plain brilliant.
It’s a musical work of art yet still commercial enough to be accessible to the average Joe.

Trevor Rabin is a genius, and just what Yes needed at the time.

Has anyone mentioned "Tales from the Topografical Oceans" yet? That album was always one of my favorites.

That album is mad as hell. You've read this a million times, but it literally was so pretentious and overblown it made Rick Wakeman quit the band.
With that said, I definitely love that album. But four 20 minute songs, yikes.

So over the top that Wakeman quit -was something thought impossible.

I hung out for a bit with Wakeman last year, and forgot to ask any good questions like about the mellotron on Space oDdity -or the piano line on Life on Mars or his TRex sessions

Instead I kept offering to do a spot on Chris Squire if they ever needed..... :lmao:

Im such a dumbass....

I'm sure it was inspirational to many. Dream Theater and Opeth come to mind.

I'd love to give the Steven Wilson remasters a proper spin. They get plenty of thumbs up from the internet overall, which is something rare.

It probably inspired me to do my long-form ambient guitar recordings. 20 minutes is nothing. But I still play 'The Ancient' in solo shows to this day.

Re: As Far As Practicing Goes...

The only full tunes I ever learn are death metal or doom ones for my band's cover's at our gigs ..so lots of Bolt Thrower, Candlemass, Sabbath, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Asphyx, Autopsy & the like.

Otherwise all I usually do practice-wise is pick out snippets (riffs/parts of solo's) that get stuck in my mind for some reason and then jam/play around with those..

Sorry, I hated that album. It just seemed like a incoherent mess. Way too long.

I saw them on that tour with Moraz in place of Wakeman.

Re: As Far As Practicing Goes...

I opened for a solo Patrick concert. He invited me to improv with him for the encore- I jumped at that chance.

Re: As Far As Practicing Goes...

I would have to say Metallica's Master of Puppets really helped me learn a wide variety of different techniques. There is fast down picking in the intro, slower melodic finger picking type bridge, and blazing fast solo for a beginner. This one was really influential for me early on.
