Attn Hoss: I think I found your problem.

I recently agreed to take charge of properly installing and upgrading the sound system at our church. While I'm pretty good with audio, a few areas are a bit fuzzy, so I figured a good, comprehensive book on the subject was in order. Parts Express recommended Sound Reinforcement Handbook written in 1989 for Yamaha by Gary Davis and Ralph Jones. Overall, it looks to be very good, with a mix of theory and practical advice.

About 3/4 of the way through, Chapter 17 puts it all together and presents a couple example sound systems. Neither of the live performance systems, "A Club Sound Reinforcement System", nor "A Typical Concert Sound Reinforcement System" shows guitar amps being miked! They show guitar->direct box->guitar effects rack->mixing console.

There's Hoss' problem! Those doofus sound techs are reading the book, and thinking that's how it's done. There's an extensive chapter on types of mikes and how they work, but nothing on the art of instrument miking.

I hope they do a better job covering my "fuzzy" areas.
