Best 2x12 for JCM800 head

I was thinking maybe instead of getting a 4x12 which will not fit in my car, i was thinking of maybe i should get a 2x12 for my early 80's JCM 800 50 watter... This 800 is the single channel early Canadian issue.....

What speaker cabs should i look at.... What speakers would sound great in a 2x12 with an 800 head.... an artist in Canada here, Kim Mitchell has a great tone with Greenbacks in his 4x12 and he uses a 50 watt 800 head model just like mine.....

I think Splawn makes one of the best 2x12's around. Well constructed, terffic looking and you can choose from a myrid of tolex and grill cover colors. As for speakers, that's a tricky subject. You will get a ton of opinions. I think my JCM 800 (2205 circuit) sounds better through G12T-75's than the V30's I used to run. I have no experience with the Greenbacks, but you will get a ton of speaker breakup with them, due to their lower wattage rating. This can be a good thing or a bad thing..depending on what you want.

If I were going to change speakers, I'd look at either the Hellatone G12h-30 replicas, or some of the new Emminence speakers, although others here know much more about them than I...so I'll leave those recommendations.

Good luck.

2x12 for a 50 watt Marshall...i's get whatever kind of cab you wanted. A great low cost cab is the new Avatar Premier 2x12 or you could look at the Splawn, VHT, Mesa, or even an old Bassman 2x12, Mojotone, etc...when it comes to the speakers I'd get one vintage 30 and one G12H30 if it were me.

That's what I was thinking...exactly! :) 'specially the V30 and G12H30 combination.

Might look on ebay for a 2 x 12 Matchless or even Marshall cab. Sometimes you'll see them without speakers so you could put whatever you want in there. I bought a 2 x 12 Matchless cab like that and put a pair of Celestion Alnico Blues in it.

Re: Best 2x12 for JCM800 head

I'd definately go with an Avatar Premier with a v30 and g12h30.
Awesome cabs with a GREAT combo of speakers. I use an avatar 4 X 12 with 2 v30's and 3 g12h30's and it sounds greaaaat. I was actually thinking about getting a 2 X 12 avatar with a v30 adn a g12h30.

Normally, I'm a fan of matching cabinets, which would mean the Marshall 1936 2-12 cab, but DO NOT BUY ONE!!! They suck!!! It doesn't really matter which brand, as long as it's finger jointed birch ply, made by a reputable company, with good speakers......Splawn, Bogner, Avatar, Germino, VHT etc.

I use the smaller 1x12 Marshall 1912 cab now.... It has a 150 watt speaker in it.... the 1912 sounds great with my Classic 50's clean channel and the 5150 head.... but it is not that great at all with the 800....

This Avatar company i have never heard of

ps-Thanks to everyone that has posted.... once i get this 800 repaired which i hope is soon i want a good cab to play it thru...

Re: Best 2x12 for JCM800 head

Most birch ply cabs are fine. The reason I don't like the 1936 is because I had one, and it sounded terrible compared to the 1960A 4-12. Most others are much better.

Re: Best 2x12 for JCM800 head

Get a Ford Probe then you can fit a 4x12 in the boot ! (or trunk as you say over the pond). I've never found a 2x12 that sounds as good as a 4x12 for that thump in the chest.

Re: Best 2x12 for JCM800 head

If you want bassy - MESA RECTO 2x12 - I have had great experiences with their gear in live setups. Built like a tank, and the V30s sounds good in the 70 watt configuration.

If you want something with a different flavor in the recto vein, try the VHT Fat Bottom. I feel V30s give you the nasty snarl. I love G12H30s, ut sometimes I feel they have more of a classic crunch, than the 80s/90s sizzle and grind.

If you want focus and punch, I would have to say Bogner.

People in here rave about Avatars, so I would figure they are good, but I do not know from experience.

I must say I have had some really nice experiences with the 300w 4x12 Diezels (NOT SURE about their 2x12s)

If you want a kickass 2x12 built to your specs with your choice of speakers, for a good price, check out Ear Candy. You simply can't go wrong as their cabs can best a 4x12, plain and simple.
