Best Tuner for the $$$...?

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

The VS2 replaced the VS1. As far as I know, the only major change was that the VS2 uses a brighter and larger display (there had been complaints about the VS1).

I have the VS1,but it was discontinued..If you buy new,you now can only get the VS2...Not sure on the differences but the VS1 is great..

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

yeah...as far as i can tell...it's just about the display being brighter!

I kinda like the TU-2 from Boss, it's pretty accurate, it's a stompbox, and it acts as a power supply for all my other pedals. I think it's like $90 or so.
Thats what I use. For the price it's hard to beat in a live playing situation.

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

TU-2 user here. Works fine for me, nice and easy. Was a toss up for me between the Korg pedal and the Boss. Both about the same money. Took the boss because it can power other pedals and the guy in the shop said the Boss is the 'industry standard'. Dunno if there is that much difference in the accurateness between the Boss and Korg. If your after a hand held tuner i have a Korg GA-20 that was £12 and doesup to quadruple flat tuning, guitar and bass. Nice cheap and simple. There are Boss hand held needle tuners for about £70 or so that my old teacher uses. Seem ok to me

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

I picked up a Boss TU-12H from eBay; they're pretty pricy normally, but I got mine for £41 less than 1/2 retail. They go for much better prices than the TU-2, for no reason I can understand other than it's not pedal form.

It's not a pedal, granted, but I built a looper with a mute function built in (cos it really really isn't true bypass) and it sits very happily and viewably on top of my amp.

It seems to be very accurate; I was using a cheapo one before, and the new found sweetness playing clean is startling.

I'd recommend it :)

Yep, yep, yep.

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

I think it kinda depends on what you want to do with it.. if you just want a quick tune before playing, the CA-30 is a wise choice. If you want to do setups, obviously a Peterson would be a good choice. For gigging, a good rackmount tuner can't be beat.

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

thanks for all the help fellas...i really appricate it...i think it's basically going to come down to the application i'll most likely be using it in!

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

Well I'm just going to mention the Korg CA-30 one more time. For $20 it's a great tuner and will do everything I need a tuner to do. My ears can do the rest! :) Lew

I bought a Korg DT-7 last year. After chasing an intonation problem, I bought a Peterson VS2. The Peterson is so much more accurate, so much easier to use, and has an infintely better display than the Korg. Today, I can't imagine trying to intonate or tune a guitar with a tuner less accurate than the Peterson. The Peterson was money well spent -- the Korg was money wasted.

You'll want to get a Peterson eventually. Instead of wasting your money on a cheap tuner you'll eventually throw away and replace with the Peterson, get the Peterson instead (assuming you can afford it).

You could have not said it better!!!! I found out the hard way also.

Re: Best Tuner for the $$$...?

When I tune and intonate a guitar with the peterson, it sings. It sounds Very pretty!!!
With a different tuner it sounds like doped up Bob Dylan. I would do your self a favor and save up, sell blood, sell other bodily fluids, organs, or your left nut for this tuner, You will not be dissapointed.

Oh come on! If you have to go through that much grief just to get your guitar in tune I have to wonder if you can really hear if it's in tune in the first place! I mean you CAN tune your guitars with your EARS....right?

Just kiddding, BTW...

But seriously...do you guys REALLY have to spend that kind of money to get your guitars in tune??? Seems kinda silly to me.

The world got by without electronic tuners for what? Several billion years?

Yes...hearing is believing. :)

Just seems like a lot of money to spend when "perfectly in tune" is usually "out of tune" in terms of tempered tuning and how we hear things. Most guys get "perfectly in tune" with a tuner and then play a few chords and retune by ear anyway.

Steve Morse has a cool way of doing it that I like alot too. He gets his "A" string perfectly in tune and then plays an "A" on the other five strings and tunes them to his open "A" string.

It's a good method!

I used my harmonicas or keyboard to tune to for many years, so I have a pretty good ear.

These days, I can usually sing EBGDAE or hear the notes in my head good enough to get in tune without a tuner.
