Best Univibe pedal?

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

Let me rephrase...A more subtle low-key Vibe. A sound that isn't chorus, yet isn't phase, but adds a touch of 'Je ne sais quois' modulation clean or dirty....

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

i wouldnt call a univibe subtle....but it definitely adds a bit of "je ne naid quois". Once you do some experimenting it youll be amazed how many records used it. Its like plugging into a timewarp.

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

If you want something very subtle yet very classic look at an MXR Phase 45...the 90 is a classic but the 45 is more subtle and just a cool of a sound IMO.

This is more quality advice from Christian.

The 45 gives you that, "Is there something on that sound?" sound.

This is a video I just made demonstrating my phase 90 as a vibe. I'm also using my old dano chicken salad to show the 90 against a true vibe. The 90 also has the r28 removed to smooth it out. I'd say it gets the job done.

See...the thing is that to me the phase 90 sounds very little like a vibe.

Yes, I watched your clip and if it works for you then go with it but to me the phase 90 and chicken salad have very little in common.

Thanks!

That's the thing with the Phase 45 to me...it adds that special something that you almost don't recognize what it even is.

Honestly, the Phase 90 sounds like a phaser, and the Chicken Salad sounds like a vibe. I love the old MXR Phasers and I've got one of each of the 45, 90 and 100, but none of them sound like a Univibe. The throb created by staggered phasing filters that you get with a true vibe circuit is absent in the aligned filters of a normal phaser. Nobody can argue if it's doing the job you want it to do, but there's enough difference between them to justify having both.

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

Yeah....Phase 45! Haven't seen one of those in forever. EXCELLENT suggestion!!!!

I got one of the handwired reissues about a year ago and just love it!

No frills just like the original and has the tone too!

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

How much do you Vibe guys use that Univibe?
I got the Voodoo labs Univibe once, and plugged it in. I Played Bridge of Sighs for about 45 minutes, thought it was cool, then got bored with it. Tried using it for anything else , and just didn't get much of a thrill, so I sold it.
The Classic Phase I got though..that swooshy warble..I could see leaving that on a lot for everything!

I guess it just depends on what you bought something for...if you are a bedroom wanker that has to have a specific guitar, amp or pedal to reproduce a song you want to jam on then once you get the pedal and jam the song then it's kind of over for you...

I have a vibe on my board and use it quite a bit...not every song or even every night...it's not really an effect is you use it all the time but I use it a fair bit however it should be said that I don't play "Bridge of Sighs", "Machine Gun" or "Breathe"...

I didn't buy a vibe to cop a tone on a record, I bought a vibe to add that sound to my set up...

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

Yeah - that's kinda my deal on swirly stuff. Even though i don't 'play out' I just want a different flavor of swirl every now and again.

I went through a flange phase last month, and I go through Chorus, Phase, etc....

Modulation is like sprinkles, never sure exactly what topping I'm gonna dig today.

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that they're interchangeable. If I had spare cash and an ongoing musical endeavor that would require many pedals, not only would I have a massive pedalboard, but I'd go out of my way to have a vibe and a phaser. I just wanted to demonstrate how I use my phaser in any instance where a vibe can be used. It's not the same, I do miss the throb, but I can dig it for now.

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

I just found out the Dunlop Uni-Vibe is discontinued!? I was going to put mine on Ebay seeing I dont use it anymore and decided not to now that they are end-of-life. I will put it in the box and back in the basement. I haven't used it since getting my Neo Ventilator. The Neo Ventilator is the best rotary sim I have ever heard in my life. It not only pays attention to the rotation speaker but also the nuances of the old Leslie tube amps that drove them.

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

I have a T Rex Viper Vibe and like it because it's a true photo cell vibe. One thing it has going for it is it has a very nice presence in a mix because it's a tiny bit punchier and brighter than others, but also has the nice deep throb.
It's also got a volume control. It's vibrato mode is more usable than some I've tried. There's a mini switch on the bottom so you can set the dwell perfectly. And it looks really cool.

The only negative is something I find in a lot of T Rex pedals.....an annoying pop when clicked on. I'm guessing there's capacitance stored up across the switch or something like that.....maybe ground gremlins??? And when you power up, T Rex's are automatically on. The Viper was also way overpriced, so I'm lucky I found mine cheap.
They discontinued it for some reason too, so I'll probably hang onto mine for that reason as well. Overall, I like the sound of it. The other vibes I've owned were the original gold Fulltone Deja Vibe and Voodoo Micro Vibe.
The gold Fulltone was a tad dark, and the Micro Vibe sounded great but only had one real setting.

Re: Best Univibe pedal?

To me, the best currently Univibe clon in the market is the Dry Bell Vibe Machine.

For a complete review-> http://hermeticoguitar.blogspot.com/2013/03/pedals-dry-bells-vibe-machine-first.html

In Short:

True Univibe Sound, complete modes (chorus, vibrato), with the high tweakability of Roger Mayer's Voodoo Vibe+, getting rid of any potential tone sucking issues (selectable input and output buffers), allows expression pedal, external commandment, etc... everything packed in the size of an MXR pedal!!!!.

FYI, I own or owned some other vibes:

Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe+
Fulltone MDV2
Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe
Lovepedal Pickle Vibe

Because of all the good things and none of the bad things of those pedals, the Dry Bell Vibe Machine is my election, hands down.

Mate, I highly recommend you to check Mad Professor Tiny Orange Phaser.
It can nail tones of two well stablished phasers: the MXR Phase 90 and the EH Small Stone but, it can go really close to that vibe swirl.
I've used it in substitution of Phase and Vibe effects, when the vintage units started to give me some impedance issues.
I liked to use a setting where you are achieving some kind of mix of a wah and a vibe voice that added a nice flavor to your sound. Difficult to explain the sound, better to check it yourself.

I have one of these and I have to agree with you. I will say that at $325, it is beyond the spending limit of about 95% of the SDUGF. This isn't The Gear Page, after all.

Best Univibe pedal?

I think I have a. Dan electro vibe pedal in the closet. I may have to pull it out to mess with it a bit
