Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

That fancypants "Jimmy Page Wiring" was concieved LONG after Bonham died, it was well after his Firm stuff, and I saw no mention of it for the recording of Outrider. I never heard of it until the first run of JP sig guitars in like 96 or so...

maybe the r&d team for the jimmy page signature just couldn't figure out how he got some of those honky, huge tones from his #1 that he got live, so they added the phase and series switches to emulate his picking attack:naughty:

of course i could be totally wrong or whatever or maybe jimmy just wanted that stuff on his sig. for some random reason, but hey its a thought.
also, keep the stuff about billy's gear coming! i really like his tones on siamese dream and mellon collie, but haven't been able to find anything but this thread.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

This is a real Billy Corgan strat.

It's got the right Lace Sensor pickups (Blue/Silver/Red), and sounds fantastic with a Big Muff.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

FYI if you're wondering how he got the tone he did on Mayonaise he actually used a guitar that cost him 60 bucks, with pickups so bad they squealed when he stopped playing. He incorporated those squeals in to that song.

I'm sure he used a Strat for a good amount of his work, but he also seems like the kind of guitarist that would use a vast assortment of random things that just tend to work for whatever he's doing at the time.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

Dick Dale would have to use 15 inchers, otherwise it would sound terrible. Same reason bass players use 15in speakers.

Can you explain further? I've played guitars with .13's on them, but not any higher, and in my experience, thicker always sounds fuller and bigger. Do strings get brighter above .13's? The 15's I've played out of generally have a deeper sound, with tighter bass and reduced treble.

Oh, bassists also use 10" speakers frequently, but I've never seen 12" speakers like you see in so many guitar cabinets, I wonder why?

I use 12's almost exclusively on bass. I used to have an Aguilar GS212, and now I have a Bergantino HT212. Both are amazing 2-12 bass cabinets. Speaker size is only one small part of the sound equation.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

I played it about an hour ago in Guitar Center.

I liked it a lot actually. I don't think it was quite worth $1200 they were asking ($900 would've seemed more reasonable) but it was an excellent guitar. The body was lightweight and resonant. The satin nitro finish really agree with me on a looks level as well as a feel level. Good neck with very nice fretwork, stable tuning, good hardware, good choice of pickups. The action was nice and easy. It was a very balanced sounding instrument. Plus I've also noticed that usually strats with tremolos have a different dimension to the sound that hardtails or clamped-down strats don't have sometimes... not the case with this one, very lively. It was begging for bigger strings, though. I hate how GC strings up all their guitars with 9's, this guitar was begging for 10s or 11s.

If I ever need a good fat strat again I think I may hunt for one of these used and make it a mod platform. Not a bad guitar!

Here's 99 cents. I don't think any real musician should puchase any artist sigeture model.
Just be your self.
I mean to say if you like SRV get a strat but don't but his strat. I think you all know what i mean. Right?

I'll see your .99 and raise you. Here's another thought.

I think any real musician should play whatever the hell they want and not give a **** about whose name is on the headstock. ;)

An instrument is just a tool. A vehicle to get somewhere. If my vehicle happens to have someone else's name on it, then fine. It doesn't make any difference to me.

Nope. People can buy a signature model if that's the guitar they feel works best for them and they've tried at least a few of their options. You're right that they shouldn't buy it just because they like the artist, but I think any knowledgeable guitarist should evaluate every guitar the same way, regardless of brand, artist association or looks.

I'll break it down like this. When you buy any sig model your are now using whats right for you.
The said person is using the tool that is right for somebody else.
This biased makes you belive this is right for you.
I dont see dave mustaine, kirk hammet, marcus miller, charles mingus etc etc etc... using anything but their own instuments.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

Really? I didn't know that. I guessed it was the Red/Silver/Blue because I had a Strat with those, and could nail all sorts of his tones with it.

Thanks for the info :)

my first modded axe is a Squier strat that had this combo in it. I now have a C5 in the bridge tho.. but the blue/silver do well!

I was always wondering just what they did to get those wails during the stops in Mayonaise.

And yeah, Billy, like many alt rockers of the day, was a little bit of a "grab whatever" type of guitarist- although I heard he was mainly a Mustang player but stopped using it when Kurt Cobain became associated with them. Also, now he's into Schecters.

Re: Billy Corgan Strat played and rejected.

the people who will spend over 2000 bucks for a vintage reissue are just doing it because they have money to piss away on gimmicks.

.

I dont think thats true. The tiem machines and Custom Shop $ 4500.00 vintage replica Starts are really some finely crafted guiatrs built to vintage spec. Theres an amazing difference in quality and tone.

It's not your call to decide what's best for other people.

And given the fact that you're using a verbatim (albeit uncapitalized) copy of Brian Carroll's stage name as your username, I find your argument hilariously ironic.

I don't know man, John Mayer has his own signature Strat and still gigs arena shows with an SRV Strat.

It's just another tool in the box, man!

Yeah, buckethead....I'm sure as he77 NOT getting rid of my Gibson Les Paul cause it has someone elses name on it. No offense, but that's a dopey-a$$ idea....:laugh2:

If the sig guitar is the one that humps your leg and follows you home, then that's the right guitar for you.
