Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
I'm always looking for a decent sized/priced Marshll - but rarely finding anything. What about crate Blue Voodoo's? I've seen a few combo's (60w/1x12) at decent prices....thoughts?

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

I have played a few and thought they were fine, I wouldn't hesitiate to get one if the price was right. I don't have any prejudice against Crate but just make sure the pots and input jacks are solid it seems to be a weak point for them.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

the marty friedman head that they put out in the 90's was amazing...i plugged in a godin tele copy straight in and the amp had gread cleans, blues tones, and metal tones...i don't like the other versions so much..

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

I guess that's a good question? Does the two channel BV have a range? Or is it a total metal amp?

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

it sounds like a mesa boogie except waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy crappy.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

Played through several of them and was never terribly impressed. Cleans were ok, gain was fizzy and kind of harsh. IMO, YMMV, etc.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

Sam played Red Voodoo's with active eq.

Mesa but Wayyyyy crappy. Hmmmm. Maybe not.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

Having owned a couple, I personally would go for a PV VTM or Laney Pro Tube. Much better sounding, and easier to tinker with. If you can track down a Risson head, those are quite nice, and generally cheap. As a guy who chases the off brand stuff, the BV is no longer on the buy list. I would take a Crate Vintage Club long before I would pick a BV.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

I had two 120 watt half stacks for a long time. They NEVER gave me any trouble...not once. They didn't have the best sound, but were definitely good.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

I've plugged into a couple of Blue Voodo amps. The tone varies between models I think.
One time I plugged into one of the heads, like the ones MArty Friedman endorsed. That amp sounded terrible. Buzzy, grainy, with a fizzy high end. It was like I could tell what tone they were going after - a sizzly, edgy metal tone - but failed miserably. It sounded more like some of the guitar tones on an Orgy CD, if you guys have ever heard them.

Then years later, I plugged into a Blue Voodo combo, and thought it sounded quite nice. Ballsy, edgy, raw, all in a very good way. If I'd had the cash I'd have been tempted to take it!

Try before you buy!

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

Marty used the Blue Voodoo on Megadeth's Risk CD.

I've always liked the amp myself. The first one I bought was a BV6212. I still own it. Then I bought a BV120 halfstack.

I keep frying something on the motherboard though. Both amps are out of coimmision right now, I haven't had time to go in and work on them. But once I do get it fixed, and get the bugs worked out, they'll be fine amps.

I don't sell ****, so I'll definitely keep them for a while.

As a side note, my Marshall Vintage modern is broke as well.

But as been said before, While I love the amp, for the money(& I'm talking cheap here) you can find better.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

All I can add is that I saw Friedman live, playing his Crate amp (dunno if it was a stock BV or his signature 300 watts monster) and I didn't like his tone. Fizzy, thin and anemic on the mids. Very raspy and screechy.

He jammed with other players who plugged into some Marshall TSL stack, and they sounded much better IMO. And I know TSLs aren't exactly regarded as Jim's best thing.

Re: Blue Voodoo amps - what do you know?

NAH.

I wouldn't.

Thin is the first word that comes to my lips. No chunk, no meat. Blah.
