"Boutique" amp for less than a new Hot Rod Deluxe!

My guitar tech showed me his new gigging amp (50 watt 1-12) a while back, and said that the guy who made it also makes other wattages. So, as soon as I had some cash we took a ride to the guy's shop. My friend told me that the guy had a used 25 watt 1-12 combo, so that's what I wanted to try.

With my Strat and Jeckyll & Hyde pedal the 25 watt 1-12 sounded great, but with high gain the low end seemed a bit "flabby". (The speaker was an unknown Celestion model.) The guy was all out of 40 and 50 watt amps, but he did have another 25 watter with two 10 inch Eminence speakers. It sounded so sweet, both clean and with the J&H that I had to buy it.

Open back 25 watt 2-10 combo with a pine cabinet and a wheat/tan colored tolex; looks similar to a Fender Deluxe Reverb. (Someone else builds the cabs for him.) Controls: Single channel amp with volume, master volume, reverb, presence, bass, middle, treble, bright switch, bass boost switch, mid-shift switch, and a switch to remove the reverb circuit completely from the signal path. Hand wired on a turret board with all military spec parts and tubes (6V6s, 12AX7s, 12AT7s, and a rectifier tube from the good old days RCA, Phillips Electric JAN) in a stainless steel chassis. The builder (ex-military) has been doing this for a long time, so these parts were probably new when he got them! Not sure which model Eminence speakers are in it, but they sound great. The faceplate has his name etched on it. The faceplate seems a bit cheap and the tolex job isn't perfect, but for what I paid I have no complaints.

Not a circuit board to be found anywhere! I'll see if I can post pics later.

Sorry, but I can't figure out how to move the pics from my computer to this thread.

Thanks for the tip, but I have no need for a photobucket picture site because I don't own a digital camera. I don't even have a regular film camera, or a cellphone, IPod, or any of that stuff. If I really need a pic of something I just ask my daughter to do it. I just found a way to post it straight from my computer, but the pic is too big.

BTW, the one thing on the amp that is mediocre at best is the reverb. Luckily, I only use a little bit of it. Bypassing the reverb adds a lot of volume and gives the tone more punch and fullness.

Yeah, that's always a sure bet these days -- the kids are bound to have digital technology easily at hand. And as far as it goes -- who needs those things when you've got a new amp!

ayrton, I sent you an e-mail, and if I'm lucky it'll have the pics attached.

One thing that I've learned with this amp: There's no way that I'd ever spend big bucks on a "real" well-known brand name boutique amp (or guitar). My friend played my set-up and made it sound like the best rig in the world. I play it, and I think that there's something wrong. I don't have the talent or technique to justify spending a lot of money on gear. I bought this amp because it's a bargain for a PTP hand-wired amp with NOS tubes, and maybe one day I'll get it to sound as good on my own.

Wow....... looks great to me regardless of cost, seems like a real bargain. Enjoy that one.

Ayrton, thanks for posting the pics! One pic taken with a flash is too bright, and the others without a flash are too dark. I should've taken the amp outside for the pics.

My friend prefers the sound of my 25 watt 2-10 over the sound of his 50 watt 1-12. He'll have to wait though; the builder is old, and only makes a few at a time in batches of the same wattages.

does he ship them? I would love one but live in CT (might be willing to drive though).

I really have no idea. I doubt that this guy has the time or energy to do this as anything more than a hobby. I think that he spends more time doing electronic repairs. As I said, he's pretty old... I don't think he could even lift the amp! My guess is that he only does the wiring, and has a helper (grandson maybe?) who puts the chassis and speakers in the cab. Anyway, I'm not sure if he even has any more amps completed at the moment.
