Brighter than a JB? Saving a Dark/Mid-Scooped Guitar...

Hi, newbie here but long time lurker. I've realized the past few years that I really love Seymour Duncan pickups in my guitars, I have the JB/59 in my Schecter, putting the Jazz/Custom-59 Hybrid in my Strat.

But I have a dilemma with one guitar in particular, my 2014 Electra Omega. It's a LP shaped guitar with some minor differences, most importantly, the bridge pickup sits further away from the bridge than a LP, which I think attributes to the darkness. It's also a mid-scooped sounding guitar, which is weird that it's dark/scooped because it has an ebony fretboard and mahogany body with maple cap, like a LP Custom.

First thing I did was disconnect the tone pot, made a nice improvement for the treble, but still not enough. Next thing I figured was the stock pickups are the problem.

First neck pickup I tried solved that issues, the SD Jazz. Nice and bright & articulate, has good "snap" to the tone and reduces the low end muddiness. Done.

As for the bridge, I'm still experimenting. I first used the Custom/59 Hybrid from my Strat and it was a nice improvement but I still wanted brighter and more mids. Now I have a JB in there, since that seemed the logical replacement and it's a little brighter but still not enough. The mids are definitely stronger now, which is good. I've heard the JB described as bright but I think people are confusing the high mid content with brightness.

I'm trying to figure out where to go next for the bridge. Which pickup is brighter than a JB but still has that strong mid content? The lows on the JB are a little weak too and could use a little more umph. What should I be looking at? FWIW, I'm mostly playing classic rock and some metal/stoner rock on this guitar through a hot-rodded Marshall 800 type amp. Suggestions are welcome, thanks!

The good ol' Distortion. Or just put a regular ceramic in the JB and get a Dokkenbucker.

If you're looking at EQ specs, forget them, they never described pickup voicings accurately. Ceramic pickups are always crisper than Alnico ones the FS-being bright and crisp the exception. Custom and Distortion give life to dead-sounding bodies, but the Custom will give the lows the oomph you need, and give enough mids and highs. If you're USA-based, you can benefit from the 21-day exchange policy, so you can give them all a try.

Screamin' Demon if you don't mind lower output.

Re: Brighter than a JB? Saving a Dark/Mid-Scooped Guitar...

Screamin Demon: brite, a little scooped mids
Custom 5: brite and more scoop
Full Shred: briter and even more scoop mids
Custom: brit and a few mids
Distortion: brite and a lot of mids - i really like it in my Paul

Just my .02 cents

Well that's good to know, I was wondering how accurate they were. I am in the States, I forgot about their great exchange policy. Maybe when I have more time to experiment I will try a few, thanks.

Judging by those descriptions I'd probably like the Distortion or Custom best in this guitar.

Are your volume pots 500K?

If they're 250K or 300K you're throwing away treble even when the volume control is turned full up.

Hence my reinforced suggestion of the Custom. It's not as high output as it might seem, and I'd also suggest that you get a push-pull pot to wire it in series/parallel. Parallel will lower its output and cut lows and mids, which may help if you want to play clean on the bridge pickup, or to give it a broader tonal palette under gain.

Check out the conditions for the 21-day exchange policy, since my best bet would be either the Custom or the Distortion, although the latter's mids will be way too aggressive for the styles you mentioned. I own both in mahogany body guitars, the Custom in a PRS SE Custom 24 and the Distortion on a Dean Old Skull V, and to my ears the Custom does Classic Rock/ Metal / Stoner better than the Distortion. Note that the Distortion name is as misleading as SD's EQs charts, though...

Everybody's ears are different, anyway.

Yes, 500k vol pots.

Cool, thanks. What do you find the Distortion better suited for? I hate scooped sounds and like a lot mids, though my amp already has hefty mids (Splawns). The guitar has push/pull pots for splitting coils. I don't have much use for cleans but I do like using the volume knob to get pseudo-cleans.

Re: Brighter than a JB? Saving a Dark/Mid-Scooped Guitar...

Maybe you just need a taller mounting-ring or make a thin spacer to go under the current ring to lift it higher,,,,,,,or whatever it takes to get the JB at optimal height.

Re: Brighter than a JB? Saving a Dark/Mid-Scooped Guitar...

Perhaps an A8 magnet would help, and/or a 1meg pot. Cant get much cheaper than that.

Re: Brighter than a JB? Saving a Dark/Mid-Scooped Guitar...

My vote would be for the Nazgul. Much much brighter than a JB, and for the higher output level it has a lot more clarity and sparkle than most humbuckers I've had the chance to play with. Also has very aggressive snarling mids so it will fit or cut through in a mix similarly to a JB in that way. Also has very tight but full lows. I would recommend checking out some sound samples or a shootout where you can compare the tone of a JB and nazgul in similar test settings

you can hear both pickups in this comparison video, best of luck!

Re: Brighter than a JB? Saving a Dark/Mid-Scooped Guitar...

See, I like the Full Shred or a Jazz bridge. Yes, you will lose some power of the JB, but you can compensate for that later in the chain. The Full Shred is bright, but I wouldn't describe it as scooped. It has a lot of high end, and likes distortion.

After watching that and really listening I can see how the Nazgul is definitely brighter with those aggressive mids. I like it, thanks!

Judging from the clips it's not my favorite and doesn't sound brighter than a JB.
