"Brothers in arms" Sound

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

Hi there Intoxicate. Let me ask...are you asking about the song or whole Brothers in Arms album?

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

les paul - set of duncan antiquities or seth lovers ... wah wah c0cked half open

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

The PG set gets e close enough for me, but I can see the slightly more nasal Seths doing that better.

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

T4D is right on spot with the Antiquity's or Seths in a LP...

I don't know what amp Mr. Knopfler used for this but it was probably his '59 Burst through... JTM45 or Tweed Bassman maybe? (just guessing ;) )

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

Thanks guys, i'll go with the Pearly Gates and try the Wah-Wah-Setting.
I think the PG Set will suit the other things I play (like Lynard Skynard, early Aerosmith) better because of the slightly higher output.

That should work ok, just maybe roll off the highs and back up the vol a little.

spot on advice for how to make the PGs get closest

and best advice of all is to play with your fingers instead of with a pick ... mess around with where you pluck the strings (i.e closer to the bridge or closer to the neck, etc) ... that's a BIG part of the total resulting sound right there

It's seems so obvious doesn't it? Playing with your fingers gives you the final ingredient to Knophler's tone, whether it's with a Les Paul, or a Strat.

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

Here's kind of a tough question, then. If a wah-wah pedal is set half-way, I presume it has specific fixed frequency and phase settings at that particular point. Could this be duplicated with the settings of a modeler amp, where I have control of a lot of different effects (Fender GDEC)? I'm working on the song Brothers In Arms, and it would be nice to get closer to the right sound.

Thx,
Noth

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

I suppose you could cut/boost the relative frequencies to get you close. It'd be trial and error, in much the same way as you'd have to rock the wah slightly to get the sound.

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

I do know that there are pedals out there that mimic a half-c0cked wah. Can't think of any names, but I'm sure somebody will know.

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

Thanks, Stevie.

Now if only anyone knew (where to start) setting the lows, mids, highs, and what effect to use. Common, guys, I know you've got the experience to point me in the right direction. :reporter:

Thx!

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

to mimic a half open wah, you are gonna need some kinda parametric EQ to match the Q and res freq of the wah circuit .. dunno if you have that or not .. you might be able to get a reasonable facsimile with an auto wah set slow or some kind of pick-sensitive envelope filter if ou have it

good luck

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

You need to suppress the high and low freqs and get a sound that's very middly and nasal sounding.

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

a dual paramtric EQ would maybe get that half wah sound
but not 100% sure TC para EQ comes to mind

Les paul ...wah wah half open as said in post
this also works for 'money for nothing'

i think its more on how you approach his style
with the right amp /effects
even rolling of the tone on the les paul
with the right combination might work

Very good info on his set up here

* Gibson Les Paul, Sunburst (c.1984 serial number 90006 re-issue) Modified so that the central position on the pick-up selector connects them 'out of phase'. Used on Brothers In Arms (with Marshall JTM45 head and Marshall 4 x 12 with EV speakers), Money For Nothing and You And Your Friend (through Soldano and Marshall 4 x 12).

Re: "Brothers in arms" Sound

Yeah, you could aim for Clapton's woman tone, and play with your fingers and it would be pretty close.
