Can I Ash you a question?

Re: Can I Ash you a question?

No, using dye will make it black black. I use Minwax ebony stain and it buffs out to nice dark brown. Just wipe on, wipe off.

Thanks.

I asked because the fretboard looks black-black on my screen.

Re: Can I Ash you a question?

The neck is Allparts TRO-W that I refretted with stainless and finished in Tru oil.
:D

I am about to do finish a Warmoth Strat neck with Tru Oil, it will be my first foray into this kind of thing.

Do you have any particular recommendation for technique?
How many coats do you find works best?
Do you finish with a final coat to seal everything or just straight up tru oil?

sorry for all the questions, appreciate any response

No problem ask away!

First, know that Warmoth uses a sealer on all necks. This is not a big deal unless you plan to tint the wood in any way.

Tru Oil is pretty hard to screw up, so don't stress. I have seen everything from using your fingers to heating up the oil first, but none of that is necessary. Just use a cotton rag to wipe on a coat and then let it dry.

The coats will be very thin, so do 3-4 before you buff with Scotch Brite or steel wool (I prefer a green pad).

How many coats is up to you. I prefer to stay around 4-5 total, then use car wax to buff. This is the finish that Ernie Ball uses, so you can get a feel for it.

Tru Oil will have a slight tint to it, and it will darken as you apply. The color is faint, but something to know.

Let it fully cure for a week or so and then use the wax (if you want). That is really it. Tru Oil is a polymer, so you do not put anything over it. Warmoth will honor their warranty with just Tru Oil.

*EDIT*

I remembered this thread where I do some strat necks. The wood was not sealed, so I was able to tint without sanding.

I believe most (if not all) the bodies MJT offers are from Guitar Mill. I have used several over the years and yet to have a dud.

Good tip on Guitar Mill; I had not ever checked them out. I have been trying various parts suppliers for a few months, trying to find some place that offers things that I now see Guitar Mill has. No place has had 100% of the options I was looking for...but Guitar Mill does, without having to make a custom order.

Have you tried anything straight from them, or only via MJT? Have you tried their finishing service? I'm very tempted to order two finished bodies right now...but want to ask around a bit first, and hear back from them regarding a few questions I sent them.

I have purchased a body from them, but never used their finishing.

Re: Can I Ash you a question?

That guitar is seriously killer! It looks like something Friedman guitars or a Premier Builders Guild brand would put together and charge 3 grand for.. with the "aged" gold hardware and all. You have a keen eye for aesthetics

I've had a few informative exchanges with them this morning. I have ordered three pre-made bargain bodies (Strat, Esquire, Jazzmaster), and a fourth body from scratch, with finish.

Thanks again.
