Re: Can I Ash you a question?
I am about to do finish a Warmoth Strat neck with Tru Oil, it will be my first foray into this kind of thing.
Do you have any particular recommendation for technique?
How many coats do you find works best?
Do you finish with a final coat to seal everything or just straight up tru oil?
sorry for all the questions, appreciate any response
No problem ask away!
First, know that Warmoth uses a sealer on all necks. This is not a big deal unless you plan to tint the wood in any way.
Tru Oil is pretty hard to screw up, so don't stress. I have seen everything from using your fingers to heating up the oil first, but none of that is necessary. Just use a cotton rag to wipe on a coat and then let it dry.
The coats will be very thin, so do 3-4 before you buff with Scotch Brite or steel wool (I prefer a green pad).
How many coats is up to you. I prefer to stay around 4-5 total, then use car wax to buff. This is the finish that Ernie Ball uses, so you can get a feel for it.
Tru Oil will have a slight tint to it, and it will darken as you apply. The color is faint, but something to know.
Let it fully cure for a week or so and then use the wax (if you want). That is really it. Tru Oil is a polymer, so you do not put anything over it. Warmoth will honor their warranty with just Tru Oil.
*EDIT*
I remembered this thread where I do some strat necks. The wood was not sealed, so I was able to tint without sanding.
