Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

Nobody should ever have to spend that much on an amplifier. Maybe if it was $2,000 or something...but $3,000? I dunno if I could justify that...

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

Obviosly some folks have much more mulah than I have.
But this question is can I justify that kind of expense. Honestly, I can't seeing spending that kind of money on a Boutique amp when I am love the tone from amps costing much less. Maybe I'm not the tone coniseur that some folks here are. But 3K...... I can't justify that for myself.

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

no especially if I have college debts I could not justify it

I saw you are selling that awesome single recto though, so wattaru lookin at?

I want a road king, but only if my job starts paying me 6 figures (otherwise I have nowhere to put it where it will not get ripped off round these parts)

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

Only you can answer the question, J. If it sounds good to you and you can afford to do it without having to live on raman noodles for the next ten years, I say go for it.

Married, One Kid, Fixed Income = FUHGEDABOTIT ! Honestly I never spent more that $600 on ANY! piece of gear. I'm a frugal minded musician.:13: Right now I'm in the process of building my own Boutique amp. When it's all said and done... It should come in under the $600 mark. Just got my Cab. today.:D Good ole' Dad did a fine job building it for me.:) I'll post some pics later.:smokin:

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

plain and simple...HELL NO!

i have owned lots of great amps and played through hundreds of great amps that were way less than even 2k...3k is out of the question!

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

If you LOVE it, and You have alotta extra cash. Then go for it.
But If you've got 3k but Not much more, I'de hold off if it were me. Mainly just incase sumthing happened And I needed the money. Ya know, Like If the kid gets hurt and I need the money for hospital bills, Or car breaks, etc...

But if you've Got a bunch of extra cash, and YOU think the amp is worth 3k. Then Get it.
But if you think you may regret it, Then don't. And If you even have to think about it so much that you'de post this poll, Then odds are You'll regret it.

Nope, because I know I could get a Dual Recto for a grand, 5150 for 600, a Krank for 1200, and have 200 left over.

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

It's mostly relative to usefulness vs. your financial means, but HELL YES!

Of course, if you're dead broke, and drive a $1300 car, it may not be the wisest financial decision, but if you know what you want an amp to be able to do, can do it justice, and can afford it....YES.

I remember being at a clinic with Robben Ford, and an audience member asked if he thinks it's worth it to own a $14,000 amp head. He replied "it's worth it to me, because it's the basis of my entire tone." He didn't pay $14,000, and he could easily sound good plugged into a reissue Twin, but why the hell would he?

I've played guitar for 25 years, and have had over 60 amps. The only amp I've ever found that is exactly what I want in an amp happens to cost over $3000. I paid $2175 used, but if it were stolen, I'd be spending a year saving up for another one. You get what you pay for. I spent most of my life being able to afford $700 guitar amps, but there's no doubt in my mind that a great $3000 amp blows it away......in every way.

I'm with you on this one. I even paid under $600 for my Marshall. However, the most expensive piece of gear I ever bought was my Martin D-28 ($1900 out the door).

Question on your amp, is that cost just the parts? If so, what about your time? That's worth something. ;)

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

If you can afford the amp and you like the way that it sounds, do it. Who cares what a bunch of knuckleheads say? What do you expect to hear from a bunch of people, most of whom can't afford that kind of thing?

Would you pay $75,000 for a car? People buy Mercedes Benz every day. Does it make them idiots?

I've got a lot of time on my hands.:chairfall Yes, That's just parts. If you factor in the time I've spent in design and assembly, Then equate that with the hourly rate a skilled tradesman would make. Now we're talking 2x's the price. But it's a labor of love.:) Even when I paint a guitar, If you add all the hour's of prep work, sanding and final rub out. I make next to nothing.:smack:

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

Not for a combo because there is always a newer guy building the same thing for a bit less. If i had the spare cash and the space for the Metropolous 68 Plexi full stack ($4000) I would consider that, my friend.....or the head and single cab for $3200 maybe

Re: Can You Justify Spending $3000 on a "Boutique" Amplifier?

Even though I don't have a 3K amp and don't ever expect to have one, I say yes I can justify it. Can an amp be worth $3000? Of course!! If an individual deems it to be, for them it is then worth it. Would I personally go $3K in debt for an amp? No, my enjoyment of the amp would be offset by the pressure of the debt!

But it is relative to both your financial means and how important it is to you personally to own a given amp. For instance, I personally won't (at this point anyway) spend $30K or $40K on a vehicle, but I know tons of people who do it. It just is not that important to me, although I could finance one if I chose to. But if I got Jonesin' for an $3k amp bad enough, for me that would add more pleasure and enjoyment to my life that owning a $30K-$40K vehicle. It's all about what resources you have and how you choose to allocate them.

Or compare it to spending $3K on a vacation, I've done it, lot's of people do it. Is it worth it? You have to ask the individuals! With a vacation, the value you have is experiences and memories. On the other hand, with an amp you've got something tangible to enjoy on and on. So... I should've just said YES and left it at that!
