Celestion Greenback vs Vintage 30

I have narrowed it down to one of these two speakers for my Marshall JCM 800 50 watt head, I just bought a 4-12 cab without the speakers. Which one do you prefer, and why? I have heard that Angus Young from AC/DC uses the Greenbacks. Love that Tone! Thanks for any replies.

Re: Celestion Greenback vs Vintage 30

I find the Greenbacks suit my style more than Vintage 30's. The V30's are a 60W speaker and the GB are 25W (I have seen some rated at 20W). The lower output of the greenback will allow for speaker distortion or breakup at lower volumes. In very loud amps the greenbacks tend to tame the volume a little more then the V30's. Mind you they are both great speakers and I don't think you would really go wrong with either. Its really a matter of personal taste. What I would do if I were you is take your head into a shop that has both sabs and A/B them to see which will be better suited for you.

the vintage 30's are more sensitive too so your 50w will sound louder with the v30's. maybe thats good, maybe not. in a 15w amp a little extra volume is nice, in a 50w amp it may be too much.

i like them both but the g12m has a great classic sound that i love. the v30s are more focused and it you play with loads of gain and a huge bottom end they are a better choice. personally i much prefer the greenbacks

If you are loading an empty cabinet, then run two V30s and two greenbacks in a criss cross pattern.

The Greenbacks are more for hard rock styles whereas the V30 is better for metal.

Thanks for the info, it looks like the Greenbacks are what I am looking for. I was also told that the new Marshall Jimi Hendrix Stack uses the Greenbacks.

Alot of people do that, heck alot of companies mix speakers these days too, mostly the V-30 and Greenback! Thats what I would do, capture the best of both worlds......

Vintage 30s sound horrid, and have a grating upper-midrange bite.

Greenbacks sound fantastic.

I like greenbacks personally. Go http://www.bobsavage.net/ and click on "amplifier demos" and scroll down to the Bogner Shiva with the different speaker combinations. Killer stuff man.

The Vintage Modern cabinets are the same as the Hendrix cabinets also...

"The speakers used in these mono/stereo switchable cabinets are the new G12C 25-watt Celestion Greenbacks which were specifically developed for the Limited Edition Jimi Hendrix Super100JH stack."

hmm... no they don't-- they are an industry standard...

it really boils down to what styles you need to play, and what type of tone you are looking for.

the greenbacks have these really cool early-breakup sound and sound extremely warm. Greenbacks are best when used for Classic Rock styles and hard rock, and produce creamy sounding leads; but I've seen them sometimes used for metal (for instance the Framus Cobra 4x12s)

the V30 have a hell of a lot of mids; Are very present and in-your-face sounding. They are very balanced and can handle a lot of music styles-- but they really shine for hard rock and Metal.

Re: Celestion Greenback vs Vintage 30

I have been in the GB v V30 conundrum for a while now - and I finally just got a Bogner OS 2x12 V30 and an Avatar OS Vintage 2x12 GB. (I also have G12H30s and G12-65'
s lying around). Calling V30s horrible is kinda funny to me. Tons of players have money, endorsements, etc etc yet CHOOSE V30s. They are also an OEM choice - and trust me price and availability rarely matter in this - amp companies themselves have told me they love V30s.

I have gigged and recorded with both, and find I love both differently. The main thing is actually using them IN a studio or ON A STAGE playing actual SONGS, NOT sound samples. You will find BOTH are great. Alone in a room at home, the GB will usually sound sweeter and woodier - but did you buy a rock amp to play only at home?

Having not gathered enough video - thus far the edge goes to V30 for versatility and sheer "size". The V30s just always sit in the mix, and sound big and loud enough - and for any style.

The GB is great as well - very sweet - but there are times you want more bottom or more volume, or more shimmer.

I will also add the V30 works well with Fender, Marshall, Bogner, etc and is more readily available as backline everywhere you go.

I also think it has a lot to do with the power amp. Bogners sound great with Vintage 30's, but Komet strongly recommends Greenbacks with the Komet heads.

Re: Celestion Greenback vs Vintage 30

I've been thinking about getting another basketweave Marshall 4X12 with the G12H-30's (55 Hz) to go along with my Vintage 30 cab. I like big bottom and tightness for all the hard rock and metal distortion. Greenbacks seem too classic warm and loose for me but I've never really given them a chance.

Re: Celestion Greenback vs Vintage 30

There's a difference between running GB's open backed or closed back. Open backed, they can get a little loose, but in closed back cab they tighten up quite a bit. Nonetheless, the G12H will be tighter yet. If tighter low end is a goal, then your better off with the G12H, and/or V30's, with their heavier magnets.
