Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

Greenbacks....just prefer that old warmer more airy tone of those, especially the 25 watters in a 4x12 cab.
The V30's are good, but I am never going to love them!

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

The V30's are an all around good sounding speaker for everything from classic Rock to even some metal.

The Greenbacks have a warmth to them that the V30's don't. The Greenbacks also breakup a little sooner so you have a little less headroom with them, but in some respects they tend to tame the volume a little better in loud amps. The greenbacks have always been my favorite Celestian speaker. The G12H30 is also a very close second!

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

It really depends what you want to do. To many the Greenback is a tonal benchmark. Like Bludave and Rid said, warm with a woody sound...but not reedy like an Alnico.

The V30 is a great speaker, but not one I think I'd like all day every day.

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I've tried to like V30's... had them in a prosonic combo, a 2 x 12 recto cab, a 4 x 12 boogie trad cab and I had to give up in the end. They always sounded harsh.. and any cab with those sounds so directional to me... i.e if I was not in the line of fire I could not hear myself. Now I'm back to Greenbacks, 70's one's in an old Orange cab and it's a great, big and warm sound! I love 'em... so much I'm gonna buy another couple of old cabs with them in when they come up at good prices.

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I really like Celestion G12H30. I think they are a great compromise between Greenbacks and V30s. They're good for the classic 70s rock, but they are perfect for country clean sounds too.
The V30s in my opinion are too much diretional... I don't know why, but I always had this problem when I used them.

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I'm glad to see this thread and know I'm not alone. I posted awhile ago about not really caring for the V30 in my 1x12 combo and most people said they loved it. Do they have different rated Greenbacks other than 25 watts or would that be what you'd run in a 55wat amp?

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I'm all about the greenbacks. My views are pretty much the same as everyone else in the thread. I use them in the 1960ax cab. They are warmer and they break up quicker than the V30s, and just sound like the perfect pairing with my JMP for a big, full sound with plently of overtones.

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

Whats the risk if any running two GT-75L's rated at 75 watts with two greenbacks rated at 30 watts in an x pattern with a 100 watt head? I was looking to do this with V-30's but you guys are making me re-think this idea!

Should just result in a 120-watt maximum cab (4x30 watts), which would be fine with your 100 watt head. Interested to see how that would work.

How you liking your new amp?

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I prefer Vintage 30's over Greenbacks. Unless they're in a sealed 4 x 12 Marshall cab, Greenbacks lack some low end...especially in an open back combo amp.

Greenbacks are great speakers and will outperform just about any speaker except my favorite Celestions.

So I like Greenbacks...but prefer Vintage 30's and G12H30's.

Well, there is the 20 watt heritage, but I don't think that is what you want. There was 65 (?) watt speaker that was produced that was essentially a 65 watt greenback, but I don't remember what it was called.

If you don't mind the money, there is a 65-watt version available from Southbay ampworks. It's the m75 (m = medium magnet, 75 = 75 Hz) 65 watt: http://www.southbayampworks.com/speakers.html

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I'm with Lew on this one. Greenbacks are cool, so don't get me wrong there, but I think the variety that G12H30 and V30 offers is very nice and hard to replace. Both give me all the tonal pallette I want. The V30 is tight and aggressive. The G12H30 is smoother with rounded highs. Each has their own midrange band where the speakers sound their strongest. Combining them gives a great marshall sound as well. Smooth meets aggressive.

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

I've never had a problem liking every Celestion speaker. I guess as picky as I appear, I'm not really that picky....I tend to appreciate the differences in tones, and then vibe out on whatever it delivers.

Just by chance, all the amps I currently own came with Vin 30's, and they've always sounded right to me....enough to keep them. However, I also enjoy playing amps at stores with other Celestions, and even owned some with H30's, Greenbacks, or G75T's. They all excell at something.

I think ultimately, my 2 favorite cabs, the Bogner 4-12 and 2-12 will end up with 50/50 Vin 30/H30. The only reason I haven't yet is because everytime I plug in, I say "it sounds fine to me."

Re: Celestion V30 vs. Greenbacks

Everything that I've read about V30 make me wanna put them in my mashall 4X12, but the smooth, earlier than v30s break up of greenbacks mentioned here really got me thinking, would it be to complicated to wire V30 and Greenbacks in an X pattern in 4X12 for a 50watt Laney AOR? How do you think this pattern would work for modern, euro-power metal type of stuff?

I'm like you GJ: I like pretty much all Celestion 12's better than just about any other 12" speakers on the market.

Even the Modern Lead G12M-70, which is perhaps my least favorite Celestion, sounds better to me than pretty much any other makers best 12.

Just like the Celestion voice...and I'm not exclusively a rock player. I play alot of Jazz and Blues too and the Celestions work for all styles, IMO.

I've used them now since about 1968 in all of my amps that take 12's.

V30 have an efficiency of 100dB, and Greenbacks have a 97dB efficiency. So, if you mix the two, the V30 will be much more prominent than the Greenbacks.

Great .... now that means I will have to try first V30 and than if I am still not happy, next stop greenbacks ... sometimes I wish I was an acoustic player ...
