Cheapest guitar you actually play

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

Is my main guitar and the cheapest I own. Has since had coverless 59's installed. But I love this guitar and at the risk of starting another epi vs gibby feud.... I play this cause it feels and sounds good. Not cause I can;t afford a Gibson. All the odds were against this being... good... purchased mail order as a backup guitar and was surprised as h3ll to relaize how good it sounded.

My cheapest

$440 in '93. Still got it, though its always threateningly close to the chopping block. Just put a Dimarzio Bluesbucker in the bridge, which has recently resurrected it - especially with the Marshall Class 5.

I had one of those Boogies start on fire once. That was fun.

More importantly. $200 SX LTD SST for me.

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

The cheapest playable guitar i own, and have owned since 1983. It's a 1974 Telecaster Custom. When i bought it, it still had it's original neck, and black pickguard with the 2 Vol/2 Tone knobs and the p'up selector switch up the top like a LP. Whoever had owned it in the past had fitted a LP type Tune-O-Matic bridge and LP tailpiece. There were no string holes through the body. The finish was 3 colour sunburst. Years later i discovered it was a factory Bigsby model, hence lack of string holes through the body. I reconfigured the layout as it suited the heavy gigging it used to see. I'm thinking about getting a new pickguard and returning it to the original layout.

Price ? $150.

EDIT : That was $150 Australian, which was probably about $100 US at the time.

Music-Yo!

dude, that's totally the website I was trying to remember for the longest time - thank you! I started a thread about a year ago and everything, no one knew. I used to drool over all the reasonably priced kramers and steinbergers. Now I gotta see if that's site still up. [edit: rats, it just takes you to the gibson dealer site now; no wonder I couldn't find it lately]

mine: a buck fifty agile, play it all the time.

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

tokai '52ri tele clone - $315 off ebay, about $100 in SD pickups and electronics upgrade

There's something cool about a guitar that has lots of stories to tell about late night gigs in clubs and roadhouses.
It's also cool how some guitars can withstand all those mods and still be great players. A Tele is a basic enough design that yours for example has now had three bridges and another neck, and it's apparently still a good player.

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

i don't have a pic but its a Squire Strato Arctic White, it was also my fist guitar and i still play it to this day, it love the sound of a strat.

my other guitar is Gibson Les Paul

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

My Yamaha Pacifica 112. Got it used for about US$140, without pickups, pup rings, or knobs. My friend and I pooled our parts bins together and came up with everything that's on it now, including the brass saddles. Tonal surprise was the 250K pots which partner well with the Seth Lovers. It's now the guitar I use the most.

pardon the pic size; will try to shrink it...

I paid £100 for this Viper-301. Pretty nice guitar, is a lot of fun to play. I wanna swap out those EMG Hz pickups once i can spare the money though.

Then there is this one which is out of commission, i want to get it going again. It is a music yo! Kramer which is a load of junk! In my collection it is worth the least, but i played my first gigs on this one so i am hanging on to it. I made a right mess putting in those pickups (originally from my Dean Hardtail) and now it is very noisy!

I hope by start n fire you meant cause it was tearing up the place with great tone..... I have enough things to pack for gigs... I don't need to be bringing fire extinguishers.

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

Long time ago the wife bought me a Jap Squire strat. I have since replaced the pickups and controls with an afterburner and booster set up. The unit is now as active as can be. I tune it to play stones stuff. But it gets alot of blues time as well.

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

The First Act Lola with Rio Grande Genuine Texas / BBQ Humbuckers. $199 for the guitar, $120 for the pickups and I am very happy w/everything about it!

Right now, I would have to say my Epiphone G-400. Paid $200 for it and threw in a Duncan Custom. Plays and sounds great, even though the guy playing it might not be so great. :D

That Blue BCRich Bich Bronze series . . . It cost me zero dollars. . . my girlfriend (now wife) bought it for me for our first christmas . . . I think she paid $199 for it. I use it every week tutoring future metalheads in our school district.
I never changed pups in it, they are hot as heck. The toggle needs a good beating on once in a while tho

(just fyi that black super wicked axe third in . . . Ya I built with my own two hands it cost me $100 and sounded great, weighed a ton and I sold it on ebay for a few bucks more. . . had a single Detonator in it. Its one of a kind and you'll never see another like it.)

Re: Cheapest guitar you actually play

My strat is a Japanese Squier that I bought for $139. Stock pups were doo, so I swapped em for Bill Lawrences. But the only strats Ive ever found that I like better are over a grand.. (BLACK one)

The guitar I did most of my learning on is a Squier strat that I bought for about $140. I learned how to mod on that one too. Its still a great axe. (White one)

And the cheapest one I have, is a Washburn MG mercury series that I bought for $75. I keep it at work and play on my lunch break..
