chrome PU covers?

Re: chrome PU covers?

The difference isn't very much, when the nickel covers are factory potted.
I think nickel is used because it has better sonic properties than chromed alloy.
If the nickel is shiny, it matches chrome hardware.

You can put covers on regular humbuckers by putting the cover on tight, soldering them on, then potting them again. You MUST use ones where the holes line up with Duncans though. Gibson covers won't work, and if you buy aftermarket, they have to specify that they can go on Duncans.

Re: chrome PU covers?

Intertesting, I'm thinking of putting covers over my sh 14 custom 5 bridge and sh1 59 neck. The whole idea is cosmetic though as the c5 is zebra b/w and the 59 is black. So you don't recomend chrome, nickel sounds better ?

Re: chrome PU covers?

Hi, its not so much the finish (chrome or nickel) but the alloy which are the covers made of. If the are magnetic they are changing the magnetic properties of the pup more or less. If you have german silver covers you are on the right side. They are dampening the resonance only a little. The Duncan Custom shop seem to shorten the screw length at the bottom to compensate.

Re: chrome PU covers?

I've always felt that uncovered pickups were a little brighter, and perhaps a little clearer sounding.

Good example of this was the BroBucker. It sounded great with a cover, though I wanted just a little more clarity/hi-end. Taking the cover off made it perfect.

Re: chrome PU covers?

I prefer the uncovered pickup sound better, there is a difference, not much. Enough for me not to use 'em!

Re: chrome PU covers?

ok listen, when you put the covers on the pups you need to seal them with wax for ULTIMATE SOUND put 2 wax blocks in a crock pot, melt the wax put the coverd pups in the wax for 40 mins. you should see bubbles commin out of the pups, take pups out wipe wax of the covers and you wont even notice a difference n sound at all.

musicians word.

Chrome covers on Duncan designed?

Chrome covers on Duncan designed?

What about Duncan designed covers? Any specialty fit on those? (They're definately F spaced I know). Got a Shecter C1+ I'm about to unload and will probably be looking for a used HB-103 set for a new black OLP Petrucci I just ordered but keep thinking how nice those chrome covered shecter pups might look in it instead.

Re: chrome PU covers?

As for the sound, it depends on what the frame (NOT THE COATING) of the cover is made of. If it's nickel-silver (as Duncan and Guitar Jones Covers are), it should have little to no effect on tone. If it's brass, it will dampen both treble and output a bit.

Re: chrome PU covers?

ok then
i'm still not really sure, I love the sound of the open coils now and the c5 is already bordering on dark at the moment. If it looks like muddying or darkening them any more I don't think I'll risk it. Thanx for your help guys

Re: chrome PU covers?

I've heard from several people who have done it that covers done correctly will not change the sound.
