Colour of bobbins under Seth Lover Pickups - how to know without removing covers?

Does anyone know how to identify what colour bobbins would be used on any Seth Lover pickup without actually removing the pickup cover?
After the help people gave me in another thread I think I'm going to go for a pair of Seths but really prefer the look of uncovered pickups.
Is there a code somewhere on the pickup that indicates the colour of the bobbins perhaps?
I'd prefer to get a reverse zebra and a double white but this is a bit of a longshot probably!
Also do people feel that removing the covers would have any impact on tone - if so what? I'm sure I've read somewhere that coverless pickups get a bit louder and brighter but is this true?
Finally, I'm keen to use these for another Jimmy Page wiring job, so would need 4 core wiring.
Presumably this wouldn't affect the tone in any way given that original PAFs were only single core cable?

There is no code that I know of for the color of bobbins under a cover. When I got my Seths, I removed the covers and my bridge pickup was black and my neck pickup was zebra. Since you want to do the JP wiring, you will need to special order a 4 conductor set of Seth's. At that time, you might also be able to specify the color.

Here's what you do to identify the bobbin colours:

Remove one of the pole piece screws from the top of the pickup. This will allow you to see the colour of the bobbin on that side.

Turn the pickup upside down and remove one of the screws that holds the non adjustable bobbin to the baseplate (i.e. the bobbin you can't see by removing the pole piece screw). This will allow you to see the colour of the other bobbin.

Cream ones are obvious. If it ain't obvious it's probably black.

Simon's method is the way most do it.

But it's even easier to leave the pole piece screw in place and just remove two of the four little screws on the bottem...they're alot shorter and turn more easily.

Remove one mounting screw and check that side for color (a flashlight helps), replace the screw and then check the other side.

There is a way to determine if you have cream bobbins on real PAF's...but I will never tell...and it has nothing to do with removing screws :22:

Ah.... I really dont care since I aint buying any more PAF's...
Look at the slugs. Cream slugs have a SLIGHTLY different spacing.
