The high output pickup thing is not necessarily the way to go. Yngwie doesn't use powerful humbuckers, and his live tone is superb.

to me, the musicman EVH is the best shred guitar I've played. All those neck-thru guitars almost always use maple for the neck/centre, making them very top endy and hard sounding. Cool if you need to cut through a bunch of keyboards, but fatiguing after a while. The EVH is bright, but the basswood body rounds out the tone and extends the low end.

i was actually thinking abouut buying one of those. but when i went to guitar center the only one they had was set up with guage 11 strings. that kinda bugged me. im used to nines. the neck felt awsome. but the action was to high. and the trem was set up really really tight. and on top of that i dont like the body shape but dam did it sound good. i wish i could have the axis neck on say a strat body. is the axis neck similar to the wolfgang neck?

i like shred guitars to have crazy colors with like green pickups, yellow inlays, pink hardwear.

were one in the same

the thing is to make it looks as weird as possible but still sounding killer!
like i said, pink ibanez rg with lower horn cut off and neon green pickups and the weirdest inlays possible!! :dance:

i played the yngwie strat and it totally sucked, the pickups could stop squealing. the tone was muddy and the strings feel really high since the scalloped fretboard. i hated it :saeek:

Uh, I think he was talking about buying an EVH Musicman, dude.

I actually loved my Malmsteen strat...but it could've benefited from some Duncans, that's for sure.

Certainly, high output pickups aren't the only choice for shred. In fact, I think that the nature of the music requires a cleaner sound...if you have good technique, that will show up better on low-mid output pups. Yngwie is a perfect example of that.

i know exactly what you mean. i actually started turning the gain down more lately. it gives your tone more space to breath kinda. i am not a fan of scalloping. i tried a guitar with a scalloped fretboard. i didnt like it. my fingers cept slipping off the strings and they left marks on my finger tips to. it didnt help in speed either. i could bend forever but thats not the only thing guitar playing is about.

oh yeah, just noticed that :laugh2:

im starting to notice that as well, my gain is usually at about 5 as we speak. alot clearer and un saturated. but ones technique needs to be good because your mistakes are shown better, which is a good thing as it will make you better!

Don't underestimate those HS-3's. They may not be the hottest pup out there but they're way hotter than stock. I've got 'em paired with an Invader in the bridge of an HSS setup. They can keep up believe it or not.

i noticed alot of shredders from the 80s used ibanez rg550s. why is this. i would get an ibanez but i dont like there necks and body shapes.
