considering buying a better amp.

I'm looking into getting a better amp. Right now I have a marshall avt150 and even though I like it a lot, I'd rather have an all tube lower wattage amp. I've been getting interested in those class A amps, and they look very appealing. If anything, I'd try and sell my marshall for like $400 or so, and then work for some more. So my price range is below $1000, probably around $700-$800. I'd prefer a 2 or 3 channel amp. Mesa boogies are great w/ the lead channel and then two rhythm channels, but those are expensive.
Any help?

thanks and God Bless

Re: considering buying a better amp.

You're in the same boat I was in recently, only I had an avt275. I ended up buying an orange rocker 30. I love the orange and have no regrets on buying it especially since I got a pretty good deal. I tried a mesa express 5:50 and came really close to buying it and I'm glad I didn't b/c it was expensive. You might wanna look at marshall dsl or tsl combos. I really liked the tsl, but again too expensive unless you can find a good used one.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

I just played a small laney amp. Those 20 watt little amps. It was great, but expensive. They had this 5 watt combo for $1000.
Tone wise, I want a clear, responsive, not grainy distorted tone. The laney I tried sounded great distorted, for solos it was even better.
I want an almost funky clean tone, and w/ the telecaster I'll be able to do that easily. The clean on my marshall just doesn't do it, it always sounds like it's just on the brink of breaking up and I don't like that.

The laney was very impressive, but the head was $900 and so was the cab. I was also looking at the hot rod deville from fender, I like those a lot and I know fender cleans are great.
How expensive are the orange amps?

Re: considering buying a better amp.

Just invested in a Peavy Valve King half-stack. Not to bad, its very durable, great sustain, and very versitile in reaching different tones. Just bought it so Im starting to grow fond of it. Ran me about $900.

If you want a great head just over a grand invest in an Orange. Those are wicked.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

I tried the peavey valve king combo at the store and I didn't like it at all. Maybe the half stack sounds better. Do you have any clips of it for me to reference?

Thanks and God Bless

Re: considering buying a better amp.

I can get them to you probably tomarrow, my stack is at home and Im at my gf house. Yeah I hear you though, I bought it through Musician's Friend, and Im already thinking about changing the tubes and investing in some pedals, cuz the destortion is the only thing that could be better on it.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

OK. I'll look forward to it :)

Man...that laney sounded good. Wondering how long it'd take for me to get the money for it.

No lying. My little orange is a real monster, you'd never expect such a huge sound out of such a small package. This amp has plenty of gain on tap, but does all the ranges of od very well.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

Have you tried the Peavey JSX mini colossal. I really liked the Marshall TSL 601. The Dr Z amps are pretty cool too.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

yeah the deville would do it, assuming you had a pedal

last i checked frusciante was using a marshall jubilee & a major, i'm not sure if he mixes the tones from both or uses the major for cleans or what but if the cleans come from the jubilee it may be worth looking into

Re: considering buying a better amp.

I have a person who might buy my amp for $700, which would be awesome. They also have great connections w/ guitar center, so that Mark IV might be closer than I think! I got more to pray about :)

Re: considering buying a better amp.

wait.. you talk about cleans and with a tele? But you have a marshall AVT and your nick is the devils horns lol. Are you just looking for a clean sound or do you want low gain/high gain too? What music do you play? Got to know these things. Most laneys, especially the newer ones, have excellent cleans and very good gain tones. Im interested in all the ones you played.. which models were they exactly? If you use ebay i strongly recommend buying off of there no matter what you do, it will save you a couple hundred at least.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

kinda funny. When I joined this forum, I was into metal like crazy. But as I mature as a musician and became a christian, my musicality changed. I used to hate clean tones, but I love them...and my tele Rocks 8)
anyways...
The music I play now is relatively diverse. I lead worship and play guitar at various churches, but I also love high gain tones and great low gain/high gain solos, etc....
Sorry for the lack of information.
I'm hoping w/ the new opportunity I've been just given, that I can get a Mark IV. Ultimately, that'd be the amp that I'm GASing over. Because if I'm in a metal mood, it can do that easily and if I want a great clean tone I know it can do that. Lord willing, that is THE AMP I wanted.
Maybe I have GAS real bad.

Thanks and God Bless

Re: considering buying a better amp.

what about the laney lc30 II ?
Its 30w single 12" 2 channel, effects loop, reverb. If I had $900 or so that that one is, I would look at it.
I am in a similar spot, I sometimes (though not lately) play with a worship band, and lead youth worship. I also play in the main service occaisionally. I also have gotten to the mostly mid gain tones, but really want (read need) to be able to crank the gain when I am just jamming, or sometimes in youth worship.
The laney lc15r really did it for me, but is only 1 channel, and used is at the top of my budget.

Re: considering buying a better amp.

I think Hillsong United does it very well! :)
"Take, Take, Take it all. Take Take Take it all"

I'm gonna keep lifting it up, but I think Lord willing I'm gonna go for the Mark IV
