Crack around the neck joint on SGs

Re: Crack around the neck joint on SGs

AGAIN - 40 years in the guitar repair biz here. The crack DOESN'T MATTER.

xcept when *you are on it! Yeah, theres a lot of cracks on SG's, but IMO, you don't want one with acrack, unless its somthing special, like maybe an old 3 pickup cusom with a slight nck jint fissure. IMP theres nothing "normal" about a SG finish crak- 'common 'sure. The neck joint is aready pretty tenous on a SG, and I'd be very suspicious of that [particular crack, yeah 'crack.".
Goober, wereent you the one going off all the time on how you have billions of years of expereince, and that a Epiphone was so musch betetr than a USA Gibson?WaCK!

I have 40 years of solid experience at the bench.
I NEVER said Epiphone was better than USA Gibson (although sometimes it might be true).
AND - I am a way better speller than you.

Doesn't poly crack around sharp angles similar to that? I had a guitar with a poly crack close to, but not along the neck joint. It looked solid.

But not at soldering. I suck bigtime at that. We can't all be perfect.

Re: Crack around the neck joint on SGs

So, what are you guys suggesting caused a large crack like that if the neck DIDN'T shift? If its just "wood expanding" why didn't it crack anywhere else?

My guess - it will crack first at the point of most stress..... which is the neck joint.
Watch some old Pete Townshend vids with The Who. He used to get some crazy vibrato by bending the neck of his SG all around during a tune. Never saw him break one while playing.... Unless he purposely smashed it at the end of the night.

Stepped on!!

Are the guitars just laying around on the ground chilling like some dirty washing?

Re: Crack around the neck joint on SGs

Thats an interesting one. It doesn't actually follow where the join in the wood is.

That's because the finish at the actual joint is three times thicker than at a corner and much stronger because of that. That crack is probably in the finish only, and is due to flexing the neck for vibrato.

And your 40 years doesn't matter either.

Man, get off of the self aggrandizement already. Enough already with your 40 years working at Guitar Center.

Nope, I would never work at Ninth Circle of Hell Music. I fix the stuff they butch up....

Re: Crack around the neck joint on SGs

Or,
Is that a new, bigger screw you used in the neck for the strap? Like a new "Scaller Strap Lock"? Would that put pressure enough to move just the paint finish to crack?
Is it possible to sand a VERY VERY SMALL area to get to said wood to SEE if it is only paint. Warranty and store policy not withstanding. Then you wood know for sure. (uh huh, silly pun)
