How bout a fender squire that I bought off a dope feind for $20.. did a minor fret job, pulled the three singles OUT, put a Seymour Duncan dimebucker with one volume control, and it actually rocks!! Dose it count???

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

When I first started playing I wouldn't tune to pitch, rather to how I thought the relief should be. I go into to my first guitar lesson and the teacher looks at me as if I am nuts. The Bass strings were tuned extremely sharp (my original way of trying to compensate for fret buzz) and the Treble strings were extremely flat. Once it was in tune, it was a whole new world to me. Unfortunately, this was my second guitar, a second hand 2004 Gibson SG Special. This is is the only electric I have that was priced above $500. Due to the way I tuned the strings, I cracked the nut at the slot of the A string.

I also stupidly tried repainting the neck with Polyurethane lacquer, which lead me to sanding the finish completely off the neck.

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

I sold my Gibson L6-S, I was 15 & had no idea how to work on a neck! There was a tiny bit of buzz so the very honest pawn broker traded me a new Squire Strat & a cheap Fender amp for it... If I'd held on to it for another month I would have been in a band with 1 of the best guitar techs in the North East who could have had it fixed for me in a jiff & for free!!! Aside from that just impulse buys that I regretted afterwards!

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

I've wrapped a drill bit in sandpaper and used it in a hand drill to make holes bigger in my Epi jr for CTS pots. It worked though. I've also rolled the fingerboard with a swiss army knife vlade, that also worked.

The fingerboard thing was only a few months ago, so I'm still doing it! As long as it works

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

A lot of things you guys are posting aren't that crazy. Some are, but some are just good MacGyvering. See the link in my OP for reference.

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

I guy I knew from back in the 70's and into the 80's "crazy charlie ". some where in the late 80's he bought himself a mint early 70's red strat. He asked me to come over and sort out his amp. I found out when I got there, the problem was he had no speaker lead. The amp and the speaker box both had a jack plug so I suggested he use a guitar lead temporarily till he got a proper one. He had one that sufficed. Before I left I stressed don't plug that lead into the guitar if it's plugged into the speaker out of the amp. You can guess what he managed to do later at some stage. Fortunately he didn't have more than one pickup turned on which of course got fried...

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

Wasn't that McCartney's?

McCartney could afford a real LH '59, this was a different owner's.

I'll tell you what, if it wasn't Dave Murray's guitar, his Strat would have been blasphemous. ;)

Ruining a '57 by shaving its neck a bit, put DiMarzios on it (and most likely disconnecting the middle PU), put pickup rings on said DiMarzios...

Hell, if it weren't Van Halen, Frankie would be considered a retard's guitar.

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

nothing too crazy. I did hack up my first electric guitar with a hack saw, power sanded the paint off the remaining part of the body and repainted it. I had a lot of fun with that guitar and learned a lot too.

I miss that guitar...

Re: Crazy things that people have done to their guitars

Trying to build a Strat body with only saw, big file, chisel and hand drill. At least I learned something about it. :)
Me too. The only power tool used on this was a router for the pickups, neck pocket and control cavity. Everything else was done with the most rudimentary of tools.
The body was cut from a slab using a hacksaw blade with a tea towel wrapped around my hand, the archtop / shaping was done with a rasp and then sandpaper, as was the cutaways, all holes drilled with hand drill.
Five way toggle cutout was done with a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a metal kebab skewer. Oh, and I used a chisel and round file to cut out the jack hole.
In case you were wondering why I didn't use the router as a drill, or to cut out the five way switch, I purchased the router as the final step when I decided that using a chisel fir all the routing work would be a PITA.
Took me almost a week just to cut the body out and I now have a permanent cramp in my right hand when I grip onto something tight like a screwdriver.
The neck was borrowed from another guitar.
