CTN builds a Star

Re: CTN builds a Star

Btw, I am impressed with the case. Any reason you didn't buy a case and rip out the interior instead of building from scratch?

Re: CTN builds a Star

What did the case cost to make? Do you think it was cheaper doing it this way?

bout the same as buying one. But this is a nice hardshell case, formfitted for the star. It's hard to find aftermarket hardshell star cases.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Agree, I was merely saying that you could have bought a case and ripped out the interior and made it form-fitted without having to build the actual case.

Can't wait to see it complete!

Re: CTN builds a Star

I don't understand how this thread went viral. There have been dozens of other similar " build" threads that Ive seen. Hell, Crusty made possibly the greatest guitar ever here, and it dint get near this action . 6000 views? I am afraid I just don't get it. For a basic ( but excellent quality and build execution ) parts guitar? Any one with me? I'm just outta touch, got too old.

Re: CTN builds a Star

I am greatly displeased right now.

Did some wet sanding of the body and headstock today and all I can say is that I am really really really not happy with how this is going.

I don't know how or why, but there are all these white pockmarks all over the body. They weren't there before I started wet sanding, but when I did start sanding they started showing up all over the place, front, back sides, everywhere. This is what it looks like.

I've never seen this happen on any of the other refinishes I've done before, but it greatly upsets me. As best as I can tell, it looks like microbits of the colour coat were sticking out through the clear coats, and when the sandpaper hit them, it pulled them right out, exposing the white primer underneath. F**K, this looks terrible. I think I'm gonna strip it all off and do it all over again next month or something, except I don't know if this would happen again. Maybe I'll just suck it up and get one of the local guitar repair shops to do it in Charcoal Frost like I originally wanted.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Aw that sucks! Were there little bumps before you sanded? Looks like they got sanded away and the primer came through.

Re: CTN builds a Star

It was pretty smooth before. blargh. I feel like the guy in your sig right now. Except with a fit of rage instead of rejoicing.

Re: CTN builds a Star

hmmmmmmm are they air bubbles? I hate when things go wrong.

Man i think its time you ditch those cans and get a small compressor and a gun setup

Re: CTN builds a Star

Next time you get to that stage instead of wet sanding try cutting compound on a wet rag, Sounds backwards but it actually works rather well.

Try it on a area you haven't wet sanded.

Re: CTN builds a Star

I'm not able to get a pro spray setup for several reasons:

1) I don't do enough finishing work to warrant the purchase
2) I simply don't have the space for it (I'm in a dinky li'l apartment. no way in hell I'm getting a spray gun outfit here)
3) Even if I did have the space, being in an apartment building, I have paper thin walls and neighbors to deal with.
4) safety concerns

It's just not in the cards right now, and probably won't be for several more years

I could just pay a shop 250-300 bucks and get it done more pro than I could accomplish.

Re: CTN builds a Star

I think i questioned it awhile ago. Did you use sealer on the bare wood? Because if you didn't then when the paint/water etc hits the surface it will make the grain pop up causing high areas all over.

Re: CTN builds a Star

Time for an update.

I handed over the body and neck to an excellent luthier named Bryan Curry. He came highly recommended to me by another luthier not too far from here. He's gonna redo it in Charcoal Frost (or as close as he can get to it) like I originally wanted. Huzzah! I should get it back in about a month.

In the meantime, the case is coming along very well. All I have left to do is glue in the inner fabric lining, and mount the handle and lockable latch. I already got the tolex done, hinges, non-locking latches, and I sprayed on the logo. Gotta clean up some spray that made its way past the limits of the stencil I made, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem, I hope. I'll post some pics tomorrow.
