CTN builds a Star

Re: CTN builds a Star

well, due to the insane humidity and thunderstorms during the past couple weeks it slowed down the spray process. Luthier says he's done spraying everything now and just needs to let it cure, but it should be ready by end of the month.

In other news, I just got pants-happy when I thought about how freakin' off-the-wall awesome this guitar is gonna be when it's done.

Got the geetar back from paint on tuesday.

It looks great.

I also decided to make a pickguard for it so I ordered some blank material from a friend who sells guitar parts, and I spent this evening shaping and bevelling it all by hand. I wanted to make it slightly reminiscent of the old Charvel lightning bolt stars so I put the little jagged bit on the back of the p/g, by mimicing the same angles that exist on the body itself. Came out rather nice, I think.

Here's a couple of teasers.

I've been oiling the neck for the past three days. I think by the end of the weekend I'll have enough coats of oil on it that I can start re-assembly. In the meantime I have really nothing to do except finish off the interior of the case and mount the remaining hardware. I think by Monday, this build is gonna FIIIIIIIIINNNNAALLLLLYYYYYY be done, then I can do the big reveal :D

Re: CTN builds a Star

^^ nice man.

So How much has this cost you all up?

courtesy of the plethora of mistakes i made (specifically regarding the screwing up of the paint and having to get it professionally redone) too much.

lovin' that color. chrome hardware will look sick on that!

I spent this afternoon putting in all the hardware and electronics on the body...it looks so unbelievably boner-inducing. Just gotta wait to finish the oiling of the neck then I can mount the tuners, and string retainers, then I can mount the neck to the body and all hell will break loose!!! It's so gorgeous :D

Man, I don't know how TLD is gonna survive after he sees the finished geetar. All the blood is gonna rush away from his brain...for who knows how long!

Re: CTN builds a Star

He is The Living Dead it wont matter cause he will still be here. :headbang:

Re: CTN builds a Star

last coat of oil is drying overnight ;)

tomorrow, pants will be soiled.

sucks that I still gotta finish the damn case lmao

Re: CTN builds a Star

So the guy who did the paint job did he start from bare wood or where you left off? I wonder if he used sanding sealer haha?

What oil finish are you doing the neck in? I was using some minwax oil the other week and damn it comes up nice with some kerosene oil backs. Just magic.

Re: CTN builds a Star

I believe he stripped away everything that I did and started from bare wood.

Using un-tinted danish oil for the neck, so the wood looks mostly like itself except for a slight bit of tan.

It sounds....friggin amazeballs. Has that characteristic upper mid bite of the JB, but it's fuller, beefier, and more oomphy courtesy of the A8 magnet (insert rimshot here). The Hotrails in parallel is a thing of beauty. It's got the perfect sizzly/spanky single-coil vibe that I love to hear in the neck position with just the right amount of articulation and warmth and no hum.

The guitar balances PERFECTLY. It's light and incredibly comfortable to play.
Action is LOW, the neck is smooth and lightning fast (I wetsanded the cured oil with more oil to 600 grit)

Lookin good CTN, lookin good! You did a fantastic job on the pick guard.

Thanks man. First time I ever did that, and it was all by hand. Used a coping saw for the rough shape, files to get it down to the final shape and a scraper blade to do the bevels.

Re: CTN builds a Star

****in' for real though man, you did one hell of a job there. Seriously one of the coolest guitars I've ever seen. Looks like a ton of fun to play.

Re: CTN builds a Star

That looks great. If you want to make the neck smoother, go over it with 1000 to 1500 grit and then end with 2000. Smooth as a baby's butt afterwards.

Freekin gnarly Dude! I could see Worf slaying a bunch of intergalactic scum bags with it, and then ROCKIN OUT in triumph!!!

hehehe Thanks bro. It is effortless to play, and sounds MEAN for teh metulz. Also pulls off more classic sounds effortlessly. Gotta love the genius of Seymour.

Yeah, I'd thought about doing that, but in my experience, the higher the grit, the flatter the surface is, and the more surface area there is to grip onto your hand. I find the smoothest/fastest feel on a sanded down neck comes from around 400-600 grit, and no higher. Just my personal experience. In any case, as it is right now, it's like the back of the neck isn't even there, it's so fast.

HAH! That is grade A awesome :D
