CTN builds a Star

Re: CTN builds a Star

For the record, this IS a guitar build to me. Definitely not putting Legos together or what the **** ever...

Re: CTN builds a Star

No offense but the body came with all the holes pre-drilled, everything shaped and routed. Same goes for the neck. This is a basic assembly. Similar to all those kits you can buy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

A build imo is when you start with a slab of wood and make a guitar with it. Maybe once people realize the difference the actual builders will post stuff like in other forums. In the last 6 months i have not seen one build thread on this forum.

And yeah some people do some pretty rad stuff with lego.

Its my birthday and i will say whatever the **** i want! CTN you will be pleased to know i am going out for curry with the family haha. Curry beats pizza that's for sure.

Joe, I gotta agree with kramersteen here.

I'd consider this more assembly than anything else. There were a few parts that were more buildy, but it was primarily assembly. I WISH I had the capability to do a from-scratch build, but I just don't have the right equipment right now (or the access to it). Not many average joes have fully kitted out wood workshops.

and for the record...I love lego. Always have, always will.

Re: CTN builds a Star

lol I don't know why I didn't think of that. I guess I just wanted to take some sexy pics of the thing completed like I had envisioned it instead of half done. But whatevs. If nothing comes of it, I can enter next year's with the completed build!

Re: CTN builds a Star

Just out of interest ctn did the luthier give you any reason why he thought your paint job ****ed up on you? I know i have said it before and it doesn't really matter now but i think you needed to seal the body more before painting.

I hate admitting defeat on something that's why i was a bit disappointing when you got someone else to do the finish.

He said it might've been just as simple as contaminated paint while it was spraying and that usually Duplicolor's paints are of pretty good quality.

I guess it makes sense though. My "spraybooth" was hardly a professional level thing, and the ventilation, while it was adequate at removing fumes from the air, couldn't get rid of all the atomized paint that was falling all over the place. I'm sure that every time I went in and out of the thing, a bit of paint dust got kicked up and probably some landed on the body. I guess I just got lucky that the same thing didn't happen on the explorer bass cuz I was using exactly the same technique/spraybooth setup. I can't help but wonder if it was the specific paint formulation that helped attract the dust though. I'm guessing the Duplicolor perfect match paints probably have a higher metal flake content in them, and maybe the static generated by them helped to attract dust to the surface? I dunno.

I know what you mean about the sealer, and I had considered that as a possible source of the screwup, but after I shot the primer, I sanded it level so sealer or not, I was still applying the colour coats on a level surface. I really don't think it was a paint incomaptibility problem as a different luthier (I got a bunch of other quotes too) told me - he implied that acrylic paints are incompatible with nitro (which isn't the case if the acrylic paint is solvent based). I think he must've thought I used a waterbased colour coat with a solvent based clear. Actually, everything I used was solvent based, so incompatibility wasn't a problem.

At this point I'm no longer upset about it. Sh!t happens, you live and learn. This was a big learning experience for me. If I attempt a finish/refinish in the future, it will be ONLY under the condition that I have a good setup that will minimize such problems from occurring.

Re: CTN builds a Star

I bet it comes back so sexy and awesome you may have to marry it. If that was me i would be like a kid at christmas time waiting for it.

Re: CTN builds a Star

dude I am pumped.

This spring/summer is being pretty good to me all things considered.

explorer bass
new amp
new custom cab (gonna pick it up this saturday)
new polaris

with any luck, by the end of summer I'll also have a new album ready to unleash!

Re: CTN builds a Star

CTN and Kramersteen, you guys and your star builds. Makes me want to build a similar design that I drew back in about 82-83. But I got to finish the one I already started first. I've made 0 progress lately. It's really gettin me down. Good to see you guys making progress!

Re: CTN builds a Star

Well I finished working on the logo for the case yesterday. The lines aren't PERFECTLY sharp, but it's close enough. I sprayed it on using enamel paints so it'll be plenty durable. Can't really tell from this pic, but it's silver, not white.

Tolex is done, obviously, and I've mounted most of the hardware. I still gotta put on the handle and the lockable latch (but I'm waiting to get the guitar back so I can locate them in positions that'll allow the case to balance well), and the corner protectors. Also gotta glue in the fabric on the inside.

On the guitar side, I've received word from my luthier guy who's doing the refinish. He's expecting to start wetsanding/buffing this weekend, so there's a good chance I'll have the guitar assembled and totally done by this time next week!

Huzzah!

Whoops...forgot that I still need to oil the neck before assembling the geetar. So hopefully end of next week it'll be done.
