Custom 5 close, but no cigar

Re: Custom 5 close, but no cigar

height is very critical on a Custom 5. However, if you have done all you can with that, let me ask you this..
Am I correct in that you like the overall tonality of the C5 but want little more edge, but the custom is too edgy??
If this is the case and alnico 8 magnet could be just the thing. I did this in a kramer Focus 6000. It basically sounds like a custom with alittle less edge and alittle more smooth.
Sounds great to my ears..

Thanks, BloodRose. I hadn't really considered that. I only have experience with Alnico II's, III's, V's and ceramics. I don't know if I'd call the Custom too edgy in this guitar. It was obnoxious. Mids and highs were over the top. Are there other Alnico magnets that are somewhere between the Alnico V and the ceramic? Or is the Alnico 8 the only one?

Well, Im guessing there are prob 6 and 7, but Ive only ever gotten 8s.

Love the custom series.. I buy one pup and mod it to the guitar and my need. I use a Custom, custom 4, 3 C5s and a C8. Didnt like the mid focus of the CC.

The 8 rounds the highs and lows off the C5 alittle. Worked for me. May not be your thing..

Re: Custom 5 close, but no cigar

Well, I got a DM Steve's Special cheap on ebay and I must say, it rocks! (thanks Devastone and Metalblaze!). It really opens this guitar up and makes it scream. The C5 sounded dull and muddy compared to the SS. It's nice and powerful, but still balances well with the Air Norton in the neck. So if anyone is looking for a pickup that is more 'scooped' than a C5, try the SS. It has more lows and highs than the C5, and has approx the same output.

No problem, glad I could help (and that my advice was good for you, 'cause everyone hears things a little different). The SS, IMHO, is a very balanced, hi-fi sounding pickup, it is supposedly the 6-string version of the Blaze.

more scooped? wow, must be pretty f'in scooped man, do you dial your mid knob on your amp back to "0" also? LOL

No, I like plenty of mids also. Maybe 'scooped' isn't the right way to describe it. It has a good amount of mids, but an EXTRA helping of bass and treble. It just makes it sound BIG. It depends on the guitar, I guess. The Signature Odyssey is a very mid-heavy guitar and the C5 just sounded bland in it. The SS was just what that guitar needed. If I would have put it in any other guitar, the highs would've bit my head off.:yell:

Re: Custom 5 close, but no cigar

So what humbucker would you recommend for this guitar.

As you can see it's a Floyd Rose Strat.
It's not a very bright sounding guitar, it's a lot more mellow than my other regular Strats, and it's Basswood.

I was thinking Custom 5, any other suggestions?

Glad to be useful mindbender.
The SS has mismatched coils and they are tuned to different resonance peaks. That is that let it sound more full I think, even if it's mid-scooped.

AHA! So one of these hybrid Custom/59 or Custom/JB pups might also sound pretty good in this guitar, no?

What do you have in it now? And how does it sound? How would you like it to sound?

Re: Custom 5 close, but no cigar

I have one in a strat too! Normal trem. Had one in my Explorer but changed to a A4 magnet too lessen the low end due to the mahogany. Have an A8 custom in a Kramer 6000.

OH! Biggest success story.. I have a Carvin V220. Maple body, ebony board, kahler, brass nut.. This this is BRIGHT!! I put a TZ in it. Surely that would darken it. Nope. Put a C5 in it and it sounds warm, sweet and rockin!!
