Custom 8 paradise!

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Cheers fella's, I'll set a couple of hours aside tomorrow with the Cornford as this is the clearest sounding amp even under heavy gain, it should be fun as I have a gig on Saturday.

did you get it dialed in for the gig?? whats the verdict?

I did indeed gig it and it sounded pretty darn good! It sounded pretty well balanced string to string so I left well alone and just enjoyed playing. Mind you, I am a bit of a donkey as I changed a few subtle things before this gig... new valves, added some home made beam blockers and the C8/ Ant bridge in neck slot! :scratchch So many changes at a good volume... but, even if my playing was just average my sound/ tone was F'in awesome! :)

:friday:

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Ok, come on then guys... help this idiot out. What is your formula to dialing a pick up in. I've never been a tweaker.. no patience you see. I like my main amp for the very reason I can plug in and play and it sounds real good BUT am I missing out? What are you listening for as a starting point of getting close? I know it may sound ridiculous but I want to understand if that makes sense? So, please run me through your set up proceedure for pick ups. Cheers.

Got my Washburn Steve Salas out of storage.. (Man I forgot how much I love that guitar!!) The pickups are direct mount.. The C8 in the bridge is actually pretty close to the strings. Im not home to measure, but its about 1/4" or less from the strings.. I know my Kramer 6000 isnt nearly that close.

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

I did sit and adjust the height for a good hour or so the night before last and found that around 4mm is about right. Nicely balanced, powerful without being too in your face (bear in mind we play Lizzy, DC, Bad Co etc up to MSG, GnR and some Foo's) and it retained that vintage vibe. Yeah.... you could say I'm happy. Just 2 guitars to sort out now.

Thats the beauty of this pickup. Nice balance, hot but not too much. the sweet spot to me is where you still have that vintage sag. But if you raise it one turn or so, youll still have clarity, but more modern attitude

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

had to throw a ceramic in the custom to see what happens!!

here is the sound clip of the Custom Sh-5 ceramic!
imo the harsher tone of a ceramic magnet makes more raw tone for metal.
CC has a tighter freq band than the C8, there different tones entirely imo. C8 is bigger and warmer. but for some reason the CC is just as big but with less sag and less hair.
the lead tone has a sharper edge than the C8 but its just the right amount imo.

i wonder if your isp is blocking comcast pages? cause i link the mp3s to my ftp.

i put the A8 back in and you just cant beat the clarity of a alnico magnet. right away there is more note separation and everything opened back up again.
maybe i was wrong about ceramics...im done set on keeping the C8 in there and leaving it. my lead tone came back all warm again. thought ceramic was more metal, i dont know now, this C8 is very metal.
i dont think you can beat this passive pickup. :friday:

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

Just took the C8 plunge. Its perfect in my HH strat. tried all; A2 A5 Ceramic now C8. Bingo!! The CC was the prettiest but needed some low end. The Custom had it but didn't have that mid warmth of the CC. The C8 is ideal.
Like the CC it doesn't split that great and the cleans are fair at best IMHO, but that's not why I have a 14K+ wind in the bridge position of my strat now is it?:biglaugh:
Now for the A8 mag in the Pearly Gates in my EBMM Silhoutte.

Re: Custom 8 paradise!

After many years of trial and error, to me the best p'ups are as following:

Neck spot: '59n w/A4 magnet.
Bridge spot: Custom 8

I've found out that this combo can do any kind of music. It's very funny seeing extreme metal heads raving about the sound my 335 copy produces in their rig (hey man, that box sounds BRUTAL! How you do it?)... then taking the same guitar to a blues/jazz gig and hear: (wow, I'd never thought I'd like it better than my Custom Shop Memphis Historic RI 335! Who wound those p'ups, was it Lollar... no? Jim Rolph?)

I just smile and hand out my "business card" (I'm a hobby guitar tech in weekends), and most of them contact me afterwards.

I've found the recipe that works for me and for the looks of it, for a lot of other people as well...

HTH,
