which do you perfer?

i play ernies normally wont touch dean markleys ever again and im using ds right now and d'addarios feel dry on the e and a string andybody else notice this?

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I don't care for either string much but, gun to my head, I'd use D'Addario before the toneless, plinky, easily-breakable EBs.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I prefer D'addario. Compared to any other string I've tried, they're the most stable as far as tuning goes, they last a long time, they resist wear and corrosion well, they have a nice even tone after the initial brightness wears off, and they have those nifty little colored ball ends. ;)

I do not like EB's. They don't stay in tune as well for me and have a gritty, brittle sound to the top end that I do not like at all.

I LOOOOVE Ernie Ball guitars, though. ;)

I still use EBs on my LP when I don't feel like waiting for some supplier to ship Elixer nanowebs to me. I'd never buy elixers at the near $20 my local store charges for a set but at $7.00 - $8.00 online they're not bad.
Anyways the EBs feel looser to my hands than d'addarios. Is it just me?

I've really been hooked on elixers lately, though. They last MUCH longer than non-coated strings and I don't feel any changes in feel or tone that I can't live with. It's like, if EB's sound really great the first 3 days and then sound OK for 3 weeks and then they're done, i'd rather have the elixers that sound great for 20 days, then sound OK for another 5 weeks and can last longer with a lil cleaning now and then.

Ernie balls are my quick-fix backups, still. I've had more d'addarios break on me than EB's and I used EB's almost exclusively for like 3 years.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

On my Strat, I tried a TON of different strings and Ernie Ball strings just work the best and have the best tone. I've found them very durable as long as there are no burrs on saddles, etc. I don't care for them much on any other guitar I've owned tonally though. They work for the strat, and thats about it (so far). They also die very quickly for me.

D'ad I think makes the most consistent strings, and they intonate and stay in tune the best, but I really hate the muddy low strings and raspy(dry) high strings. I've only had ONE guitar where they worked tonally- a Gibson Explorer w/ ebony board and stock ceramic pickups. Everything else I've put them on...yuk. Its unfortunate cos the quality (and availability, and good price) is there.

I prefer the feel of DR strings in general, but they are a PITA because of the way they are made, and they can really throw off your intonation and often require you to re-do the nut slots, even when using the same gauge in DRs as you were using before. GREAT strings though for stability and clarity and bending.

Recently tried some GHS boomers again- not digging them, they will be coming off in the next couple of days.

I usually end up with Dean Markley- I realize alot of people don't like the "edgy" sound, and they tend to be stiff apples to apples, but I've had great luck with them- whether the originals (now the Vintage Reissues) or the NickelSteels.

I also like Gibson Brite Wires on certain guitars, and PRS brand strings (though made Daddario, have an incredible feel and sound nothing like regular Daddario strings.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I must get round to trying out D'addario electric strings one of these days. I love their acoustic strings!

I mostly play EB 10's, but I tried Rotosounds recently. No likey. Too much of a gritty sound when distorted, and I like the slinky feel of EB's better.

I've never tried D'Addario's. Ernie Ball 11's have satisfied me for over ten years.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

well see i went to samash and the guy recomended daddarios and i asked for 9 and he gave me 10s which im pissed about they sound great when not distorted i played dance the night away and on the major triads in the beginning the notes in the triads mushed up and didn't blend right

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

D'addario's. I've used both and D'addario's seem to have a more consistent tone over the life of the string. It takes them a while to get dull unlike the EB's. However I think they are a bit less bright to start with compared to EB's

Two things:

1) Always check to see whether the counter monkeys give you right right gauge.

2) They sounded great NOT using overdrive... did you have the same mush problem when playing the chords clean as well? What you're describing sounds like an intonation problem to me... playing triads with distortion without having your guitar intonated properly will always result in mushy sounding triads.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I've gotta go with D'addario on this. I've used EB's most of my guitar playing life, but more recently I've had problems with dull sounding strings and just less longevity so I've switched to D'addarios for "quick fixes" as FuseG4 states. I too, however, am an Elixer guy for now. I have a set of D'addario EXPs for electric I'm still waiting to try out.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I liked DR Pure Blues but when I started wrapping I had some issues with them so I went back to D'Addario EXL115. I need to try their pure nickel strings eventually.

When I was younger I worked at D'Addario for a short while they are good people there and a Long Island company to boot. I would've like to have stayed there but I found out I am massively allergic to metal dust. They made strings for lots of other companies and I am pretty sure EB was one of them.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I've never had a problem with either and they both work for me. I usually buy whichever one I can get a better deal on.
