d'addarios vs ernie balls

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

i used to use D'addrios
im an Elixir guy :D

+1

Had to convert as well. I've played D'Addarios for a long time, but needed to switch to Elixir's after stringing them up for the first time. They just sound new for so much longer . . .

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I use Ernie Ball's, have done sine I was bout 16, but I get the odd pack of D'Addario's and there's not really a whole lot of difference to be perfectly honest.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I've been using both D'Ads & EB for a long time but over the last few years have moved away from D'Ads. Had a lot of breakage problems with brand new strings coming undone right at the ball end. Put 'em on and they'll go 5 minutes... between that & the "bag" packaging I got pretty tired of the mess.

I bought a box of Dean Markleys late last year and they've been good to me... tried the Blue Steels which I last used MANY years ago & they feel way tighter then other strings. There's a couple sets of DR's and a few others kicking in the box that I haven't tried yet.

By far the worst strings were Dunlops... I bought three packs that all sounded "dead" as soon as I put 'em on and on top of it, I actually broke strings for the first time in a long, long time! Just terrible.

DR Pure Blues!

There's no going back after you use these, unless you can get your hands on genuine R Cocco strings.

I've been wanting to try these and GHS Nickel Rockers, but no one around carries them! Looks like it's off to eBay for me. :D

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I use EBs. I used DRs for a while, but after a few packs had unwound strings with strange blobs hanging off them, I switched back to EBs (which are a lot cheaper here, and seem to be of more consistently high quality). I haven't experienced any problems with them losing the new string sound quickly, but I have perhaps the world's least corrosive fingers. I don't mind D'Ads, but I'm satisfied enough with EBs to not be interested in switching brands.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I like all strings as long as they stay in tune, intonate, and don't break. Right now i'm using GHS ROCK-ITS and like them alot.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

Im using elixir right now. I really like the tone and they seem to play like butter even 3 weeks after putting a set on. Sad thing is they are sorta hard to come by for me as the nearest store to me usually only has 9s in electric's. i like 11's. Id like to try the d'addario exp's, but ill have to make an out of town trip or order a set.

other than that to get back to main topic. i prefer d'addario over EB.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I'm using Elixir right now too... They feel great for a long time, and the tone is quite nice I guess. I really just love the fact that I don't have to change them every month.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I remember I used Slinkys ever since i started, because many guitarists i liked used them, and i always heard that to get close to someones tone, you need to consider every aspect of the tone...

i tried out Daddarios a few times, be it because of price, or availability.

I liked them, but I thought they were always too warm, I missed the clanky high end.

IMO, both are quality strings that I would gladly use with confidence. If i had a choice, id use EB.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

well, i'm not sure if the choice was supposed to be just between those two strings (i guess it was, 'cause EVERYBODY is familiar with GHS Boomers and they weren't included on the list so...

3. Ernie Ball's always feel rusty to me - straight out of the pack.
2. Fender Super Bullets - always sound dead and dull - straight out of the pack.
1. Black Diamonds - hahahahahahaha ! the worst strings ever made. fingers will bleed.

D'Addario's ? i tried em once. can't recall, but never used them again.

GHS Boomers for me. but i think i may be switching to Elixers. i put them on my restored Kay. just lovely.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I've been using D'Addarios nickel mostly and like them but my last set I tried the D'Addarios ProSteels and actually really liked them. I find my Epi LP a bit dark so the brighter strings gave it a much better balance in my opinion. I'd get them again if I didn't already have another set of the regular nickel strings lying around.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

Used D'Addarios for 15 years. Never got along with EBs or Dean Markleys. My local store stocks DRs, and they are just as good as the D'Addarios.

Re: d'addarios vs ernie balls

I've used Ernie Ball pretty exclusively for almost 20 years. I recently started using their coated strings.

I'll try something else every now and then, even just out of curiosity, but I always go back to the Ernie Balls.
