Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

Whats the difference? Specifically im wondering about the tuna melt and the cool cat trem. Is it just a rehouse or is it completely revamped with one being significantly better quality than the other?

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

Back when Danelectro started making effects, the big box pedals were significantly higher quality units than the "food series" (love that term btw) disposable pedals. After a few years they dropped the big pedals with sturdy aluminum enclosures and came out with the "Cool Cat" series. I am not sure about the Cool Cats and how they relate to the food pedals, but I know they are not built nearly as well as the earlier big box pedals. Not that the originals were built all that great in the first place ...

I don't know enough about the specific circuits to be sure, and I can't find any reliable schematics for either on the net. There aren't too many ways to make a trem pedal though. Both use the same surface mounted parts and both have the same controls, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were the same circuit.

The Cool Cat claims to have true bypass, which would definitely be different from the Tuna Melt.

In any case, I can think of half a dozen trem pedals I'd buy before either of the Danelectros.

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

I can't speak for all of them, but I had the food version of the chorus and it completely colored my tone even when it was off, I got rid of it.

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

I have a Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive (v.1) pedal I bought new a year or so ago and it sounds great.

Metal box, true bypass, actually can make a reasonable claim to being "transparent" overdrive...

If you can find a v.1 TO for a reasonable price now, buy it.

That one is definitely the gem in the line.

Not surprising, since it's a Timmy with cheaper components.

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

The cool cat series is definitely a more robust pedal. Unlike the "food series" LOL! that came in a plastic. (afraid to stomp on box) I tried to rehouse a BLT (or whatever the slap back pedal it was? But the flimsy PCB & surface mounted components made it a effort in futility. The cool cats still have the annoying horizontally mounted knobs, And the switch seems a bit stiff. But this time around they seem to have swiped some boutique tones ,And made a half way decent price point pedal. I got a CO-1 drive for $25 shipped NEW! I A/B'ed it with my buddies OCD v4. While the OCD was clearly the better pedal, The CO-1 surprisingly held it own .:cool2:

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

yeah, i knew about the cool cats supposedly "cloning" some boutiquey pedals. i had a trans OD v1 and i like it somewhat but i sold it because it wasnt my sound...didnt love the timmy either.

im looking for a cheapish, small footprint trem, and ive actually heard really good things about both the tuna melt and the cool cat.

Yeah search Danelectro Transparent OD over at TGP and you'll come up with all kinds of hits from Paul C (the Timmy Creator) about Dano totally ripping off his design.

I'll admit... I bought it because I'd read about that, was curious, and wanted to grab one before they stopped making them as a result.

I struggled briefly with the notion that my purchasing the pedal was unfair to Paul C because it was supposedly a rip-off of his work, but it occurred to me that there was no way in hell I would ever spend 300 bucks and wait 3 years (or however long) for an OD pedal... I was never a potential customer anyway...

As it is, it's a nice-sounding pedal that sits unused in my closet with the rest of them.

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

I've had a bit of experience with both series. The Cool Cats are much better than the food series but I'd still check out other things.

The Timmy is $129 shipped and the wait is about 4 months. I talked to Paul on the phone yesterday. ;-)

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

YOU SHUT UP WITH YOUR CALLING ME OUT ON MY CONJECTURE POSED AS FACT

jeez, it's like a dude can't even talk completely out of his ass around here...

This is untrue. I have disproved that theory many times by talking out of my ass exclusively for the last 4 years or so.

Anyways, the Cat series is better than the food, IMO, for the simple fact that the little plastic flimsy knobs are not a few inches away from the activation button. When I started playing, I had 3 of these food pedals, and managed to knock every single knob off of them.

Anyways, like it was said earlier in this thread, there are a lot of trem pedals I would buy before and Dano stuff.

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

I own the Cool Cat fuzz and the Chicken Salad Vibe, which is basically the most famous from the food line. It's got this little trim pot inside that's a real stinker to get at, but when you do, you can make a 25 dollar pedal sound like a real vibe. I'm pretty sure the Cool Cat vibe is the same as the Chicken Salad, but with the trim pot added to the controls.

I really like the look and construction of the Cool Cats, they're really sturdy and the switches are a vast improvement for Dano. I'm a little aprehensive about my fuzz now that they came out with those second versions of them, what's the deal with that? Does anyone know why they put out newer versions?

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

Does anyone know why they put out newer versions?

I believe most (if not all) of the first versions were near exact clones of popular boutique pedals. Once people figured that out they kinda had to change things. Someone correct me if I'm pulling a phil :p

Re: Danelectro: Food series vs Cool cat series

I have the Daddy-O overdrive and the Fabtone Distortion. I haven't messed with the Daddy-O, but I've heard it isn't the greatest thing in the world. I'll probably sell it or mod it.
