Dimarzio Evolution vs EMG 81 review and clip

I swapped the EMG 81/60 in my Eclipse for a Dimarzio Evolution and PAF Pro. I recorded a clip of each bridge pickup:

To keep it simple, I used only the 5150 amp+cab model on my Helix ("PV Panama") with the default settings. No postprocessing. No adjusting levels between the guitar tracks.

The clips, while short and not perfectly played or mixed, adequately show the differences IMO. The EMG 81 is more polished and even. It strips away a lot of nuance in your pick attack. The Evo is the opposite - every detail jumps out. You can hear pinch harmonics in that clip that aren't there at all for the 81.

EQ is closer than I expected, but the 81 has a noticeably narrower response. The lows don't go as low, the highs don't go as high, but pretty similar in between. Both are very tight, modern-sounding, high-output pickups with an aggressive upper-mid emphasis.

Let me know your thoughts on the clip and your experiences with these pickups. Hopefully this helps someone decide between these two.

EMG 81 sounds like it should in your demo. I thought the Evo bridge sounded a bit fizzy in the top end.

The fizz is my fault. A well known trick on the Helix is setting high and low cuts in the cab block (~70Hz and ~6KHz), because the default settings (no cuts at all) is completely unrealistic and prone to fizz.

The new firmware fixes this by having reasonable defaults but I haven't updated yet. And for this comparison I didn't change those defaults like I always do. Basically, I rushed it.

I wanted to avoid biasing the comparison to whatever pickup I tweaked the settings to. So I didn't tweak at all. Oh well.

I don't hear an overwhelming amout of fizz, TBH. I prefer the tone with the EVO here. I hear the added extreme low and high-end that's characteristic to passives and that actives cut out. Cool clip, thanks for posting!
