Distortions and JB's oh my!

I am your doctor of love!
So getting some work done.

I have a Distortion Set going in a Silverburst Cadillac. Replacing the JB8 and the 103 Neck in there. Great DiMarzio-esque / Duncan tone, and I do really like the 103 neck. But It's time to go back to LOUD!!!!! The Silverburst is just a mean color scheme and it needs mean pickups.

Then, in Classic 80's fashion, a classic 80's pup. In my Dean Pinkburst Caddy is a JB Bridge - straight up A5 style. With appropriate brushed metal cover from Philadelphia Luthier's.

Stay tuned for pics!

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

You know the Distortion and JB are the same pickup, only the magnets are different. The weaker alnico 5 magnet gives the JB a darker tone.

^ No they aren't. I've spent time with an A5 DD. And also JB/Custom and DD/Custom hybrids. They're voiced differently although they have a similar profile.

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

They are NOT exactly the same pickup - from Evan, Falbo, etc....

However - they are close. Close enough that I say a Distortion neck with an A5 is a JB neck.

But a JB with a regular ceramic is actually a Distortion light....

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

You guys crack me up. If you only knew...

What I’ve said on record is simply that the fact the DCR’s match up doesn’t have to mean they’re the same coils/wind. I said that there are a lot of other ways a coil can be different. The “samers” took it to mean that I wasn’t admitting publicly that they were the same, and the “differenters” took it to mean that I was telling you that there’s something different about the coils.

I don’t think any of you actually know, so any zealous militant insistence of one side or the other is of no value. No one should be arguing about this because you do not know.

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

Yeah I do. The JB and DD5 sound about as differently as they do to the Alt 8.

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

I can’t tell if you’re just pushing me for information. Unless/until someone else made the correct information public somewhere, my position is that companies deserve to be able to hold trade secrets. The internet and former employees make that more and more difficult every day. But then once things become public we can use them for education.

For example it’s known and confirmed that the A2Pro and Jazz are the same coils, which teaches the importance of magnet material and gauss. It’s also known and confirmed that the Customs are all the same coils plus the Full Shred Bridge. That teaches magnet differences AND magnetic circuit differences, in that the Custom 5 doesn’t sound the same as a Full Shred. And knowing those coils are the same doesn’t diminish each product’s value in the marketplace. Each one is unique enough to warrant its own separate existence.

You need to hear me on this: I guarantee that as it relates to the JB/Distortion/Invader coils, you do not have this information. A small sample size of listening tests does not constitute significant science to make such a confident determination. I’ve played dozens of JBs that all sound different. There’s nothing to substantiate whether you’d be hearing tolerance variables or actual recipe variables.

My advice is from now on you should say “I think they are different” or “based on my experiences the coils sounded different when I swapped magnets”...

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

I disagree with you about the idea that any pickups with the same dcr could be the same minus mags, and that we must be respectful of their trade secrets. I suppose it's POSSIBLE that the extremely obvious differences I hear between the JB and DD5 are due to tolerances, but I highly doubt it. I'm not deaf and can hear at least 3 differences between my JB and DD5 that indicate they're most likely different formulas.

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

Let's not debate this on this forum. Get back to the OP, please.

Re: Distortions and JB's oh my!

Apologies if I have mis-quoted you oh great powerful Falbo!

- Next Jamocha is on me!!!

I very strongly believe this - but can neither confirm nor deny based on any discussions I can accurately remember.

All you need to do is look at the DC resistance. They are both the same. That means it’s the same number of turns of the same gauge wire. Also true of the Invader.

They like to say the “winds are different,” but that’s nonsense talk. [emoji16]
