Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

Hello everyone, this is the question, do you think that all cabs with Celestions Vintage 30 sound the same?

I had a Marshall with greenbacks and sold it, now my 2 principal cabs are home made with top notch materials (dense rigid wood, thick leather, nice tolex, and professional wirings), 1 of them is a 4x12 with Greenbacks which sounds the same than the Marshall i had or even better (reason i sold it)
The other one is a 2x12 with V30's thats a nice portable and loud cab with nice power tone

But the thing is i have the gear fever and watched some Orange England made cabs that catched my eye (2x12 and 4x12 with V30's both) to match with my Orange heads.

Are they worth the money? those are expensive cabs, but will it be really an upgrade besides the looks?

Re: Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

Upgrade over your own cabs? Not if your cabs are built up to top-notch standards.
Orange uses the basic production V30 IIRC. (chinese-made)
So if that's the V30s you already have and they are in a very similar sturdy all-birch cab then Orange won't be an upgrade just a side-step.
IMO

The cab's dimensions will also have much to do with how the speaker voices, not just it's quality and wood-type.

Now Mesa has their own V30 made that has the mid-spike's center shifted downward a notch, plus they make multiple cab sizes for each configuration (112,212,412).

Just want to tag on that cab dimensions do make a difference.

Also, my OCD makes me want to match head/cab, so I understand.

Re: Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

Also, 16 ohm cabs sound different than 8 ohm cabs. Part of it is because the speakers sound slightly different, and part of it is because amps behave differently depending on the load they see.

And Orange cabs have British-made V30's. I believe it's only the Chinese-made 1x12's that come with the matching Chinese-made V30's. But 2x12's and 4x12's come with British V30's.

I have noticed that smaller tranny amps, like most 20 watt and less amps, seem to prefer 16 ohm cabs. It might be that your using more wire on the secondary side of the output transformer. However, with big tranny amps it doesn't seem to make much difference, although Mesa likes their amps pushing 8 ohms regardless.

The thing with orange cabs and if you buy them is, the brittish made are real celestion v30 speakers but if you buy the cheaper v30 voiced cabs well they are chinese made cabs with chinese made speakers to sound like real v30 speakers.

Chinese V30's have a sound of their own. Doesn't mean they sound "worse", though. But yeah, they don't sound exactly like British V30's.

Are you sure about that? I believe they all have Chinese V30s.
Also, there are not that many British Orange 2x12 and 4x12 in the US. They make them in the US for American market.

Re: Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

I have a Trace Elliot 1x12 combo, an old Kustom 2x12, a Trace Elliot 3x12, and a Mesa 4x12 with various types of V30s and they all sound different. Granted, they have different Ohms, different vintage, etc. But there would be no confusing one with the other.

Re: Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

I have a Mesa Rectifier 4x12 and a pair of Mesa Rectifier 2x12s, all from the early '00s and all with their original Brit V30s. The 4x12 sounds nasally and tubby (it's going bye-bye), but the 2x12s don't. YMMV

Re: Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

The short answer is no. There is a lot that goes into cab design and the same speaker can sound different in different 4X12s or 2X12s. Many times a cabinet and speaker combo is voice to the head. I have had good results mismatching, but even better results matching, Mesa with Mesa, Fryette with Fryette, Friedman with Friedman, etc. My experience anyway.

Re: Do all cabs with v30's sound the same?

All cabs with V30s aren't the same - not even all V30s are created equal. There is variation between every speaker. You can take two V30s from the same production line, and while they'll sound like a V30, you'll find they sound somewhat different (even in the same exact cabinet) when you put a microphone up to them in the exact same position and A/B the tracks. Then cabinets have their own sound - different dimensions/volume/enclosure resonances, densities, grill cloths, etc. If you like the way a particular cabinet sounds, and it sounds unique enough from what you already have, then get it.
