Double Cream not allowed anymore?

There are many threads on this board about double cream bobbin humbuckers being made as Shop Floor Customs as long as covers are put on. However, I just received a communication from SD Co. that they cannot do double cream even if covers soldered on.

Have any of you heard this? Is this something new?

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

Many years ago, Larry DiMarzio slapped a patent on "double creme" open bobbined humbuckers in an attempt to prevent immitations of his Super Distortion model humbucker.

Stupid, really, considering how Gibson created the things thirty years earlier - if only by the accident of Hughes Plastics running out of black pigment. Remember, humbuckers were originally meant to be covered. We were never meant to see the what colour the bobbin plastic happened to be.

I know about the trademark...and how to get around it with covers on the pickup. Both of my Seth Lovers are double cream...and I didn't special order them; they came that way. But many here have ordered double creams as Shop Floor Customs. SD said they couldn't do that...even though they used to do that based on many threads on this forum...

The first rule of double cream bobbin club is ...

DON'T GET CAUGHT !!!

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

the double cream trademark is definitey one of the most stupid trademarks ever and the fact that he trademarked the name PAF really pisses me off!

I think full-cream products have been proven to cause high blood pressure and heart attacks, and thus are no loger in flavour .... errr ... favour.

I wish SDs could come in double cream, as i much prefer that over all black or either version of zebra.

Of course it is possible to create them from two pickups (zebra and reverse zebra) and then sell the all-black version, although that would require some work and probably incur a small loss of money on selling the black one. It is something i may be doing in the near future.

Can they still be got from the Custom Shop ?

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

I must be thinking of the dual resonance patent.

I know in the 70's the SD was only available in double cream, and there probably wasn't many other double creams around then (without being covered). I like Dimarzio, and I can kinda see how this was their "trademark" but still, it's a ****** move to actually trademark it.

I have a boutique double cream, now I'm afraid to say who made it.

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

You might want to delete that from your post, LPP.

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

When I asked the Custom Shop, MJ replied she could do it.

If the Mojo Queen has so spoken, no futher speculation is necessary.

Just place the order, pay up and wait what you need to wait.

Consider yourself blessed having MJ wind something special for you.

Long live the Mojo Queen! :notworthy

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

I was told by a ex-forum SD dealer that when Yngwie switched to Duncans, Larry Dimarzio became a little furious and the heat on the whole "double creme" thing started to simmer a bit. It's totaly ridiculous in my opinion. A good reason to stick with Duncans, regardless of the color!

Well, that would explain things...

Re: Double Cream not allowed anymore?

but i would still consider a double cream a symbol of homage to DiMarzio anyway. whenever i tried to figure out which players had dmarzio SuperDist, it became clear as duh that double cream EQUALLED super D.. of course i found this out after buying the black one. so maybe that period of history is over. in other words, its like saying, i dont know who Rick Nielsen is, i just happen to want a 5 necked chessboard Kramer, or Im not into Sabbath/iommi , i just want the crucifix inlays on my SG.. are we past the associations ( and ergo the profitable patent?) my$.02

The only proper answer to Dimarzio's abuse of the American intellectual property system (both trademarks and patents) always was to boycott their products.

If Larry wants to sell more pickups, maybe he should make better pickups?
