Double cream trademark latest

That's why SD can do the P-rails, Carvin/Kiesel can do the 12-pole bobbins, and BL can do blades all in double-cream...they aren't the traditional humbucker with 6 poles per bobbin.

Plus, SD has a patent on the underlying PA tech, which means DiMarzio could never offer a pickup like that, so the argument is largely moot. It's as different from a PAF-style pickup as the blade pickups are! Lastly, if it's just a forum-only special run, there's essentially zero chance that there would ever be a concern about it.

I wrote the Custom Shop to inquire. Not sure who handles these things these days...if anyone has a better suggestion of who to contact at SD, let me know!

Wait, wasn't it that the trademark is for aftermarket pickups? Carvin pups are stock factory installed

I’m not sure…if that’s true then Gibson could legally make them too. But I don’t think they do.
Actually, wasn’t the original lawsuit against Gibson?

Wait, what? They blocked GIBSON from using pups that look...like classic GIBSON pups??????

Wacky

I’m not 100% sure how the original lawsuit went down, but I “think” they sued Gibson over it.
Somebody with more knowledge should chime in if I’m wrong here.

Interesting news...while SD is not able to take on any special projects right now, there is definitely some interest in doing something "special" for the forum, perhaps later in the year!

While it would require a special batch of bobbins to be made in the cream color, a double-cream Parallel Axis set is not out of the question!

Who here would be interested in a forum-only, limited production set of Parallel Axis pickups in double cream, possibly around the holidays?

If you guys seem to like the idea, then I can start a formal thread to assess general interest among the forum. SD would need to know that there is genuine interest before they could move forward on something like this.

Any idea what the price point might be?

Not yet, but I would expect the price to be reasonably close to the "regular" price of a set of PA pickups, maybe with a "shop floor custom" upcharge.

SD has created limited runs of special color bobbins in the past and those pickups never carried "custom shop" prices. This is really no different. Once the bobbins are made, which isn't particularly difficult, the pickups themselves can be wound and assembled on the regular production floor, as long as we stick to the original PA set in terms of construction and features. In fact, that's probably the only way SD would consider a project like this given their backlog.

The biggest issue facing this project is garnering enough interest to justify the custom bobbin run. If we can do that, there's a good chance we can make it happen. I'm scheduled to follow up with SD in a few months, so there's no major rush, but I'd like to know if this is something peeps would be willing to get behind...

I agree, but we're still a ways off from needing to discuss things like minimum order targets. The project has been suggested and SD indicated interest, but the whole concept is solidly on the backburner until they get back to full operations.

For now, my instructions are to assess interest here and reach out to SD again in a few months to revisit the idea.

That said, I'd grab at least 2 sets for sure. I can see the PA design looking really cool in double cream and I know exactly where I would put at least one of them!

Also, has there been any discussion as to which PA variety would be made or are they all game?
I’m thinking once you have the bobbins made, the actual wind can be done according to whatever someone would want?

I'm certainly interested. Are we talking price breaks for multiple units for each member?

We're not talking anything about price yet, but we can bring this up when it's time. As I mentioned, formal discussions are a ways off. SD is still in recovery mode. I was just sharing that they are interested in doing something with us and the double cream PA set is a possibility

No discussion about this yet, but you bring up a good point. We can certainly ask when the time comes.

I will say that the easier we make it for SD, the better chance this has of taking off. That said, it might not be too much of a hassle to have the different versions made up. We'll see...
