Dumb wiring question

I feel dumb posting this but I couldn't find anything searching. Do the lugs on pots have specific uses i.e. a certain position is the ground, middle is output or anything like that? I can follow a diagram easy enough but now I'm trying to modify them and my understanding is lacking. Talk about frustrating!!

I have 2 P-90's and I'm trying to do a switch for each that does in phase/off/out of phase, with a push/pull on the bridge to do series or parallel, 2 volume, 2 tone with independent volumes and it appears to have turned into quite the debacle!! I can't find a schematic on the web for this and I haven't been successful adapting ones to work so I'm thinking if I understand this stuff better there's a slim chance I can get this done!! I posted something similar a week or so ago but with on/off switches but I figured out using on/off/on switches I could combine the on/off and phase switch.

Re: Dumb wiring question

I recently wired a LP with twin Phat Cats, using a push-pull for series (I got the diagram from Artie or Hermetico). Very simple. With phase & P-90's/Phat Cats, when you reverse the hot and ground, that can make some noise if you don't have an additional ground wire (3 wires).

BTW, I never use mini-toggles; too small to solder easily, and it's not smart to drill holes in a guitar (does wonders for resale value).
