Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

You're already on way too much...maybe you should just sit down and take it easy. Wouldn't want you to o.d. on all that ego you've been injecting straight into your head!

By the way, an extra dose of "reality" is what we're all on! We've offered you some, but it's obviously not your thing!

::ring:ring::
Phone Call! It's Eddie Van Halen asking for someone by the name of "Pittbull" or "Nitro"...
He says you didn't use protection the other night and now the input jack hole on his amp is pregnant! Also, both he and his amp have a restraining order against you...stop trying to have his tone babies!

this solo has the phase 90 on. that is a smoking tone with a unusual amount of gain i have not heard anyone else get from their plexi? he had something in front of that amp!

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

I dunno... I'm The One and all the Frankie tracks sound a lot like VHII to me. I think the production and level of compression in the post-recording mix might be the key. I think they went "overboard" on the first record and even Eddie didn't like it that much.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Maybe it just sounds that heavy cause of the way it was mixed. Studio magic and all that. What all effects did Ed have on his pedalboard?

Jose Arrandondo (sp?), his old amp tech, said he used a boost or distortion pedal. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it was a hot ceramic. Maybe it was aliens.

at the time of that record he was using a MXR script phase 90,echoplex,univox for ending of eruption, MXR flanger(aint talkin bout love)
thats it

My vote goes for the OD box in conjunction with a cranked plexi and a 14K ceramic, then you would get that dose of gain from a SLP
That or
Something like this!

But it isn't THAT different from VHII. The differences are subtle and he was using the "hot" PAF exclusively in his Charvel Strat in 1978. The echoplex also provides some boost and many have said that was the "secret". Heck, they make pedals that are designed to simulate the preamp response of an echoplex without the reliability issues of the original unit, because so many players used it as a subtle boost pedal. I think that was key. Maybe the pickup was the difference. He didn't need a TS9 or anything like that to get that tone.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Ayrton you believe john suhr and friedman,woooooooooowwwwwwwww.

lol... Hard to believe that I would take both John's and Dave's (as I happen to know both) word over yours, I know.

What was I thinking?

I guess I can look at this subjectively because I have no desire to achieve the "VH 1" sound (or think it is all that to begin with).

You keep on chasing rainbows my friend, I will go back to playing my own tune.

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

Maybe Ed's plexi was stock at the time of VH1.......Marshalls back in the day were very inconsistent (plexi's, JMP's, 800's) you never know. Maybe it was all stock and just had some subtle parts in it that gave it more gain that others.

Wasnt DeMatini's (sp?) plexi all stock back at on the early to mid RATT stuff? I heard him say it got more gain that your average plexi and it was 100% bone stock and had a high(er) resister plate reading....or something like that. You never know

Honestly, if everyone spent as much time improving their playing as they spend on going crazy about trying to get Ed's tone......we all would be shredding like Edward

Re: Duncan Custom SH-5 Special Van halen pickup

How about a treble-booster? Could he have used a Rangemaster or whatever?? Just speculating here......

An echoplex can do that and his Phase 90 was modded by Jose to boost treble. The signature EVH Phase 90, when you switch on the "EVH mode", bumps the treble up.
