Hi
I bought one of Bruce Kulicks ESP's, it needed setting up so I checked the pickups and the bridge humbucker has a white DDJ sticker on the bottom along with the stamped SD logo. I'm guesing this is a Duncan Distortion (sounds that way) but what is the J for and why use a ddj sticker???
Thanx!!

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

That there is one of MJ's babies. It is a Duncan Distortion wound by MJ.

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

so how are these different from standard duncan pickups and who is MJ?

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

MJ runs the Custom Shop. She has been with Seymour winding pickups since the company started and in the early days is the one who has wound countless pickups for countless players along with Seymour from us here on the forum to mega-star status players.

The difference between that one you have and standard production models is yours is older. Today's are the same pickup, same wind, same magnet type, etc., just not wound by MJ.

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

No problem. And welcome to the forum.

I'm curious. How did you acquire one of Bruce's ESP's and which one?

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

Bruce Kulick has been my favorite guitarist for a very very very long time!

That's awesome that you got one of his guitars!!! I thought he mainly stuck to JB's though... oh well!

Cangrats on the great gutiar score, but POST PICS!!!

Rock On ~ kac

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

if you check ebay.co.uk and search esp kulick or item no. 7389786284 in the completed items you will see the guitar. The guy who I got it from originally got it from boogie street, I emailed bruce to verify it was his guitar (though this is obviously an artist model when you look at it, the build quality is amazing, the graphic is airbrushed not transfer and the neck has a 1 3/4 nut space!) Bruce used it for a couple of recordings ( for a slightly different tone because of the DD) but the graphics dont fit his current image (they are way darker than the pics in real life!) so let it go. The guy also sold a V belonging to the guy from black label Society (not Zak). I think I got major deal on the ESP, luckily I even got the trem arm!!
What do you guys think? 80/90s rock but I love it!!

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

That is cool. Very cool. Man, what a nice catch that is. I much prefer that style ESP headstock than to the newer ones.

The BLS guy would be Nick Catanese (The Evil Twin).

I think I saw that guitar when it was for sale from Boogie Streets.

Excellent Score!!!!

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

thanks guys, yep I really like the guitar especially the headstock. It plays amazing and sounds even better. I've never heard a DD like this (thats why I took it out to take a look.) For a guitar with a floyd (though ESP it is awesome) it has amazing bottom end and every string rings clear. The guy I bought it from hadnt used the guitar so with a little bit of TLC its a keeper and a player.

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

The pickup has the MJ mojo in it. ;) I used to have one in my teen years and stupidly got rid of it. At the time I only knew it was a Duncan Distortion. A few years later I learned who MJ was.

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

yep it has something going on!!! gonna have to stick another DD in another guitar and compare!!!

They are still around in large numbers. I bought a bunch last year, I've still got a DDJ, JBJ and '59nJ

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

The auction is wrong, he is still in Grand Funk Railroad... I think the guitar is prolly worthless to you know, you can go ahead and send it to me.

Rock on ~ Kac

To be honest, I haven't looked really. When I get to this year's Arlington Guitar Show I'm going to be looking. Almost snagged a 59BJ last year but ran out of $$$. :D

Re: Duncan DDJ from Bruce Kulicks ESP

Yeah Kac I'll send it now :-) !! This one is a keeper like my kramer elliot easton I dont think I could get a better guitar. So do the early SD stickered models sell for more $??

As with all things, it depends on the buyer....generally no.

There are people that will, most prolly won't.
