Duncan Double Creams....

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

Hi,
Y'know, Parchment looks really great. IMHO. I would rather have double parchments in my honey maple LPCustom. Or my SG. Or any guitar that isn't white.
Not cream, mint or relic white, but parchment. I love it. I bet I am alone. Look at Jeff Becks original Flame maple LP in the original JBGroup. When th cover comes off, it is blinding white. There are other white/black zebras. Not cream. So I don't get the love for cream as much as everyone else. I do Love zebra or double parchments. Old J.Page shots too, back in the early Zep days. White.
The white double bobbin (I have 3) only looks good on my Snow White Strats, I have 2 stage worthy, and 1 that could be re-born with a neck, electronics, pickups, you get the idea. But only cuz it's white.
Call this JUST SAYIN'.

Original double cream PAFs are not white.

They are Cream and more or less match the cream binding and cream pickup rings on a Les Paul.

I had a double cream in one of the 50's Bursts that I owned in the 60's.

JUST SAYIN'.

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

There are actual double white bobbin PAFs too. But Pageys was double cream in the #1 and #2.

Gibson bought whatever color they could when black ran out out.

Is that really true? Never saw a double white in any 50's Les Paul. I saw Jeff Beck's '59 from 12" away: definitely double cream. Not white.

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

I've got a guitar that would look fabulous with double creams, as I'm sure many of you do. Is this new Les Paul a sign of something on the horizon that would give us hope of ordering Duncan double creams at last?

The world want to know....

Bill

I had been debating about putting this on "blast", but I've seen a couple threads that would benefit from this info.

I ordered a custom shop set and requested double cream. I got a firm no from someone who was double checking the specs. He pushed for "aged parchment" which would get that "darker color". Couple weeks later:

The lighting in the room wasn't the best and neither was my iPhone 6s. The humbuckers are a shade darker or so. I'll see if I can take a pic with less light later.

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

So,
I am not the only guy who has seen double whites. Obviously you haven't seen the few pictures I have with Beck's double white and and black/white zebra. Page to in concert first time his old cover came of in the bridge. The white violin rosin was invisible on that pickup. So, I swear on everything I know and Love, I have seen them and others have too.
But that' just two adults with he said he said endless arguement. So let's not. The point I am making is that what Yereadhouseoveryonder is saying, double partchment looks cool. I don't think it even needs darkening, but you could do it. And with a little more skill than I have, dye it so it it more cream like.
Steve Buffington - if I find a shot, I'll reference it to you, but I am not able, and don't know, nor have the equipment I guess you need to transfer pictures. Lewguitar, I am a fan of yours, so I really mean no disrespect or sarcasm - Ever!

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

House, those are really beautiful guitars and the parchment coils look good. Love 'em!

But in looking again at the Les Paul in question, it definitely has double creams, not parchment.

Duncan Double Creams....

I took pretty crappy pictures because honestly, the parchment looks cream lol. The only difference between the 80s Duncan Custom in double cream and the hybrid is the aging the DC has gone through and name of the color. The original owner smoked a lot, the entire pickup reeks of cigarette smoke.

Duncan Double Creams....

Well I don't believe Gibson ever used double white bobbins in 50's PAFs.

Double cream, double black and cream & black zebra, yes.

Never saw or heard of double whites.

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

ive never heard of white paf bobbins either. any pics out there?

as far as the guitar, im guessing that duncan made gibson what they wanted as since as oem. i doubt dimarzio would go after either company for it. as far as i know duncan still will not make or sell double cream after market pups even from the custom shop

Re: Duncan Double Creams....

Still strange, since Gibson does not offer any of their own OEM pickups in double cream. As to recent production, when they have made guitars with creams, they have been DMZs.

DMZ holds the trademark for the cream color, so I would suspect that at the very least their attorneys would send a "cease and desist" letter to any US company violating their trademark rights. Even the big guys like Gibson and Duncan.

I suspect there's been some kind of licensing agreement with $$$ involved. Would love to know...
