HI stranger! Welcome back! And with a vengeance!! Good review! I always used random picks, then I switched to Dunlop tortex oranges (.60?) and those had a nice grip and versatile stiffness. I bought a gross of em to put em with all my guitars. then I read a write up in a guitar rag about what the pros use and many were using Jazz III reds and blacks. Decided to try em. At first, the stiffness was not good for strumming for me, but for picking... WOW!! my precision and all increased tremendously. Then I got hooked on the Eric Johnsons. I think just cuz of the added grip of the raised lettering. THEN..... I discovered the Carbon Fiber ones... Wow! Even better grip, cool look and nearly same feel. So, Im all about those now...

The JP looks more like the small Stubby more so than a regular Jazz, specially in the tip area. If they sound anything like the Stubbies, then I'll only dig them for high gain work (heavy click to the attack sounds amazing under gain but I don't like them in other applications). I favor the EJs myself, they basically feel like my regular red Jazz IIIs when they've had some wear, although I've had a recent return to Fender 351 medium or heavy pickups. They sound great under clean or slight overdrive with Teles and Strats, with an attack I think of as "classic".

I still feel the most comfy on the EJ Jazz IIIs,but the new JP picks actually have a better tone..The note clarity is better with these also..I attribute this also to the fact that the JP picks are a little larger overall.

I've never tryed the stubby picks..The new JP picks are larger than the standard Jazz IIIs but still smaller than the Jazz XLs..The new Planet Waves(D Addario) Nylopro picks are also the same size as the JP,but tonally not as good..I find I pretty much still use the EJ pick and the JP for tunes that have more chording..I Like the smaller size and it's what I have become comfy with for alot of years..

There's also a clear Stubby that's the size of the JIII, but beveled to a sharp edge - unbelievable speed with those, but if you ever slide one down the wound strings, throw it away because the edges will be toast :lol:

I think it's the 1.0. The Stubby 2 is a fat little guy that I can't hold onto.

Otherwise, I've been using the regular reds since a friend turned me on to them in '89. Tried the black ones, but they're just too stiff for me. Either I fling them inadvertently or they grab the string too hard and spike the note. The recoil on those is also murder :lol:
Tried the purple and green delrins as well - same size as the JIII, but the greens are thinner. You get a decent strum tone similar to a full-size pick, but as well, they tend to warp down the middle (at least for those with a death-grip, like me). The purples were ok, but the edges were almost square. I had to bevel them by hand with a nail file before I could use them. Plus, they were slicker than baby spit once you started sweating on them.

The JIIIs can get a nice strumming tone if you turn them sideways so the rounder part near the top is hitting the strings, with the point going towards your palm. At least to my ears.

I recently began playing the Dunlop Jazz iii and all I can say is I am blown away! I cannot imagine ever playing those old full sized picks ever again!

Totally in love.

It's like the picking hand is closer to the strings and I Like the speed and control I get with the smaller Jazz III picks..Every time I try using a bigger pick,it just feels weird and I Lose some of the picking speed.Lately now I find I even like the the yellow Ultex Jazz IIIs..I think Bonamassa uses these?

Picks are inexpensive and I Like trying out different styles..Haven't tryed any of the stubby picks,but worth checking some out!

I just came across these Dava picks that are the same size as a Jazz III yet they have a rubberized grip area which could be cool. The real thing I'm interested in is their tone and feel across the strings based on the different materials. The red are delrin, the orange gel and the yellow nylon. I'm most curious about the gel ones and how they'll compare to delrin and nylon tonally since it's been ages since I tried a gel pick and since I can only comfortably play jazz size picks now this seems like a good way to test it out.

I have a bunch of different DAVA picks. Do not always like the tone, but they have the best feel/stay in my hand easiest. Good stuff. The green nylon ones with the ridges are my faves.

Cool stuff John.

As for the Dava picks I switched to them for a minute about 2 years ago...loved them but they are thinner under the rubber grip than a Jazz III and I broke a lot of them so I went back to Jazz III's but I still have a bunch of them and will use them from time to time.

Happy New Year Christian...I remember reading a post from you about the Jazz IIIs..I think you also mentioned that you got used to the smaller pick and that like myself,you find you can't really play with the larger picks...I used Fender 351 celluoids for many years..I have a ton of picks that are all pretty much the 351 size...LOL...

Just to chime in,I tried one of the Ultex J3's Sat nite at a show.It felt OK,but the tone was more subdued than a reg J3 or a Petrucci pick...

Will do. So far nothing has been able to dethrone the red max grip Jazz III for me. I highly doubt these will get me to switch to them to be honest, but they seemed interesting enough to buy the assorted 6 pack of and give them a try.

What I've come to realize about me and guitar picks... If it's not Jazz III size I won't like it. If it doesn't have a pointed tip I won't like it. If doesn't have a beveled edge I won't like it.

I thought the 2.0mm black Jazz III could be cool but they turned out to be horrible. They're 2.0mm thick with no bevel on the edge so they get hung up on the strings rather than gliding over them as they would if they had a beveled edge.
