Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I Love the EJ picks also...Nope..the max grip is snappier..You hear more of the clicky, brighter tone with the max grip...The EJ picks I Like better..They sound better and they aren't as grippy..I don't like that the max grip feels like sandpaper between my fingers(My least favorite)...The yellow Ultex Jazz IIIs are awesome also.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, sounds like I will need to pick up a pack of the ultex next time I am in the music store. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with the carbon fiber max grips?

You're welcome...Haven't tryed the carbon fiber ones? I'm pretty well stuck on the red EJs and the Yellow/clear Ultex Jazz IIIs..Don't really see the need to look further.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I switched to the EJ picks about a year ago from Dunlop tortex I had been playing for over 20 years and have been pretty happy. However thanks to Stratdeluxer's thread I tried out some of the JP picks. They are outstanding! They are just large enough for me to grip but also comfortably change the pick angle...I wasn't as comfortable doing that with the EJ picks as I am with the JP picks or the tortex type I used before. I like the tone of the EJ and JP picks...the JP's have a bit more attack but I was very happy with the tone of the EJ's as well.

My only concern is that some of the JP's had irregularity on the edges...they weren't smooth. Look like a manufacturing error b/c 2 of the picks in the pack were perfect. Anyone else see this on the JP picks?

You're welcome pal...I've only used 1 JP pick so far out of the package, but will look and see if same scenario with mine? My favs still are the smaller sized Jazz III EJ and the yellow Ultex ones.I'm just too used to the smaller sizing of these picks..I Like the tonality of both these picks also. The JP(For me)is a nice pick for strumming chords and acoustic stuff. For lead playing, speed, accuracy it has to be the Jazz III picks for me.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I haven't gotten any JPs yet but I did come across some black Ultex Jazz III 2.0 picks. There the same size and shape as normal Jazz IIIs but they are convex in shape (thicker in the middle and tapering towards the edges). I like them a lot. Still want to try the JPs though.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I've tried to get along with Jazz III's but cant get past the size. It just feels too small in my fingers. Tried the Jazz III XL's....problem solved. The XL's are perfect for me...slightly smaller in size than Tortex but considerably more grip surface than the regular Jazz III's. I might try the JP's at some point. I wish Dunlop would make Jazz III XL Carbon Fiber...that would be the shizz.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I used the red Jazz III's for years, then I went to those tiny fender teardrops when I was getting heavy into jazz. I recently got a pack of EJ's, JP's and Ultex. Of the three, I definitely like the warm and middy sound of the Ultex the most, it's how I like a guitar to sound. The EJ's feel absolutely fantastic, and in a gig setting I really prefer their sound and flexibility (I feel like they are the best for strumming and chords of the smaller picks). I think the only reason I don't use EJ picks more is that I can feel them wearing down, whereas the Ultex ones are still smooth as the day I got them, even after hours and hours and hours of use.

The JP ones.. they had a really smooth playing surface, and the size of them felt great. What I couldn't get along with was the squeaky tone they provided, they made my guitar sound really bright and unpleasant. I feel like if I were a metal player using really dark distortion they would be the perfect ingredient for helping the guitar retain clarity, but as it stands the tone isn't quite for me.

What I really want to try, are the Tortex Jazz III XL, I really want to get back into playing full sized picks for their strumming potential, and the red nylon ones just didn't quite have the right tonal character for me.

Maybe I'm being a bit anal, but it's one of those little things that I really notice changing my sound and how I play.

Maybe I should try the XL's too just for giggles. I do some hybrid picking and I've had problems adapting to the Jazz III/EJ. The JP did solve the size problem for me.

I had bought some of the red Jazz XLs and again, didn't care for the larger sized pick. You may also like the new Planet Waves/D Addario picks as shown in my original post. They are about the size of the JP picks.

Here are the blue ones.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

I currently use the red Jazz3 XL. Only problem I have with it is the tip could be a little more sharper to cut through the strings easier and not flex as much but I like the size better than the regular Jazz 3 size. I'm ordering some of the JP picks tomorrow off of Ebay since no stores carry them.

Do the JP picks flex at all or no? Also how do they sound compared to the red nylon Jazz 3s?

The JPs don't flex and they have a snappier tone, though not thin sounding.I Love the JPs for chording/strumming,but still prefer the smaller EJ or Ultex Jazz IIIs for overall playing/lead work. The JPs are nice and they have a nice tone overall.I got mine from www.stringsandbeyond.com I think?

For me and my styles,I prefer the Ultex or the EJ Jazz IIIs over anything I've tryed.I'm just used to these picks!

What i like about it is it's "Transparent". Smooth material that's kind of beveled, so it doesn't have any kind of "plunk" sound. Especially if you're holding it with just a little tip sticking out. Great for playing fast. If you're strumming with it, you have to be very relaxed. I have issues on fast disco strumming, when the pick kept rotating between my fingers slowly, and there's no time to adjust it. For strumming, i guess it's better to use something bigger and lighter.
I love Jazz 3s for shredding. It helps you get in and out quickly without any drama.

If you think the Jazz III's are too small... go for the XL's they are perfect for anyone who likes the Jazz III tip but wants more surface area to grip onto.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Just bought some JP Jazz3s off of Amazon and they should be here later in the week.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Thanks guys...The JP picks are really nice..I Like the size and they feel so smooth across the strings while picking...The new Planet Waves picks are a nice color..Maybe they will be great picks also?

Does anyone make the Jazz3 or JP picks in the Fender style material? I have been using Fender medium and heavy picks for 20 years and like the material, but they are a bit too round/wide although the dunlop triangular ones are too narrow. The JP looks like the right design, but it looks like hard plastic or nylon.

If you're talking about the celluoid material,I've not seen it in the Jazz IIIs.The JP picks aren't celluoid also.I was a Fender Heavy 351 pick user for ions before switching to Jazz IIIs a few years or so ago.The JP picks are shown as Ultex material.

Re: Dunlop Jazz Picks...Jazz IIIs...Tonal Findings

Was reminded of this thread when I got done with my latest little project. Was curious what Dunlops other materials would sound like if they were cut down to Jazz III size and had the edges beveled. So using some thin double stick tape I stuck a Tortex Jazz III to use as a template to a bunch of picks Dunlop doesn't make in Jazz size like the Delrin, Gator Grip and .73mm Tortex and took them to my mini belt sander, a file for the bevel and some sand paper and rubbing on carpet for the final polish and I now have custom Jazz III picks haha. As I was doing this I was worried I'd create a monster and that I'd love one and forever have to cut down custom picks. That's nearly the case since the 1.5mm Delrin, in Jazz size it's pretty killer. If they made it I'd buy it. Just ordered every other 1.5mm thick (that seems to be the best thickness to me) pick Dunlop makes that I didn't have already to try cutting them down too just for curiosity sake. With guys like Gravity and V-Picks making picks by hand I figure it's not that nuts to modify some already made picks....at least that's how I've been justifying this little experiment haha.
