Dunlop/MXR pedals

Dunlop/MXR is the only company I want making the pedals I use. I've used a few different Boss and Digitechs over the years, and of all the pedals that are available at my local music stores, the dunlops are the ones I swear by.
Let me know what you guys think, I'm sure there are some out there who swear by BOSS... That's kool, some of the best players of all time use BOSS, I'm for dunlop, let me here what you think.

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

right now I'm just using the phase 90 (the original orange one, not the new EVH one)
but I've also used and am a fan of the M-104 DISTORTION+, if I could pick-up a blues jr. amp for the right price, I would have one of those going into it, that or a fuzz-face I'm a fan of those too...

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

I'm not loyal to any one brand name. I use whatever works.

Right now I'm using;

- Boss (x3),
- Red Witch,
- Ernie Ball,
- Ibanez,
- MXR/Dunlop (x4),
- Tech21,
- Effector 13, and
- Electro-Harmonix.

I mean, why limit yourself to one brand based on name alone? Go for the tone!

Have you tried the MXR double shot distortion pedal?
IMHO, it blows away the distortion+

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

MXR Smartgate=yuck! I hated that thing.

Yeah, I'm a Boss fiend. :)

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

I find dunlop to be hit and miss, but so do I find alot of companies to be. I tend to pick and choice.

My Dunlop/MXR stuff would be my Uni-Vibe and Wah, down the line perhaps an EQ and Phase 90. I've never enjoyed many of their distortion boxes.

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

rite rite, I agree that Dunlop isn't some great company above the others like BOSS and digitech, everybody has their good and their bad....
Right now I guess I'm just relying a lot more on dunlop/mxr than other companies, eventually I'll prolly find somethin about them that I don't like...
oh well, Rock on :smoker:

I have and I do like it, but I appreciate their pedals that have stood the test of time, such as the Phase 90

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

I use a Distortion + too. Yeah, the Double Shot really does kill it, but the Distortion + is still really good too, and it's cheaper.

I personally love Dunlop/MXR pedals. Although I only use one as of now (Dist +), I have plans for two more (Phase 90 and Crybaby 535Q).

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

Well I have a weird observation on the MXR phase 90.

I have a block logo orange one, and the new EVH one with the script button. I heard the script button gives it something extra, more high end and cutting mids.... WELL. Heres the funny thing.

SO I'm comparing the 2 with fresh batteries through the same amp (Splawn Quick Rod), and how surprised was I too find the that new EVH one sounds better with the script button depressed (off) than either in script mode or my old ornage one... WTF? At first I was dissapointed, but its an awesome sound. Maybe mine is wired in reverese, cause the block setting on the EVH was exactly what I wanted and expected from the script setting.

Maybe it'll teach you that vintage tone hype isn't everything it's cracked upto be....

....of course, it could also be wired backwards.

:)

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

I own a Crybaby 535, a Phase 45, and a new EVH Phase 90. That said, there are many many many pedals that sound amazing. Don't limit yourself to the mass produced pedals at you local stores. Go to www.musictoys.com and check out the huge world of pedal diversity.

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

I use and MXR Phase 90, Micro amp, and I just got an EVH phase 90.

I have to say that at first when I played the EVH, in the script mode I was wondering if it was working right.

Anyway after actually comparing them side by side, I found that what I originally thougt was true after hearing about the EVH model being less in your face.

My orange phase 90, has a really nice effect and I love it better than all the other phaser out there, but at times, especially on stage, it got to be a little obnoxious at certain points in the phase cycle.

THe Evh seems to have the same sound, but it seems tonedd down a bit and the effect itself is not quite as loud.

I also think personally that it sounds a LITTLE better in the block mode than that original.

I like the way the MXR pedals are built and I would use all MXR pedals if they made everhting I wanted that was affordable.

I want one of their Flangers ,but can't afford one and for some dumb reason , they don't make them anymore. Plus I think their delays are a vintage pedal also.

That being said , I have always used BOSS before I got the 2 MXR and I always liked thier sound and never had a problem with them.

I curently have a Chourus Ensomble that I love and a Digital Delay, I hate the BF - flanger I have and I also have a GE -7.

The only other pedal I have for obvious reasons :) , Is an Ibanez tube screamer.

LOL,, thats what I was thinking too. Sometimes you get caught up in that whole reissue/vintage BS, and then are dissapointed when you try it and find its really not any better than the new stuff. I will say though my '79 reissue ADA Flanger is awesome though. Completely transparent when off and the best analog flange I've ever heard.

I've got a New Years Gig Friday, and my band does Eruption, You Really Got me into Hot For Teacher as a Second set closer so I'll et to test it in a real world app Friday... I have found that boosting the treble on the amp a little when using the EVH Phase 90 gives me a much more authentic VH tone and really brings out the sweep in the phase.

I won't play through it all night though, I'm such a wiener I unplug the pedal and plug back straight into the amp. The guys in my band make fun of me for it, but I hate running through pedals.

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

Don't feel bad about plugging in and unplugging pedals during a set or band practice. I do the same thing. I use several effects now, but I ran straight into the amp for 15 years, so I too prefer the direct path. However, I rarely go straight into the amp anymore. I usually have at least 2 pedals hooked up at a time, but only the ones I'm using for those songs. I'll take a 1 minute break when it's time to change out the pedals for a different batch of songs. Your not alone.

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I played 10 years straight into a 5150 dry as a bone and never had a regret. I only use the Phase 90 on a few VH covers, the rest I play dry into the amp.

Re: Dunlop/MXR pedals

I'm going to echo screamingdaisy here, you shouldn't just stick to one brand. 'Cause no one brand makes the best of every kind of pedal. As for my stuff, I've usually stuck to BOSS, but have found better things recently:

-Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor... great
-Boss MT-2 Metal Zone... too heavy for me, probably selling it
-Boss BF-2 Flanger... pretty nice
-Boss AC-2(??) Acoustic Simulator... not so good, probably selling it
-Boss CS-2(??) Compression Sustainer... pretty good, not needed for my humbuckers though, probably selling that too
-Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion... was good for awhile, but MARSHALL OD is better
-Boss DS-2(??) Distortion... alright, really cheap, but not enough kick for me
-Boss RV-3 Reverb/Delay... stellar unit, got it for $70 too.
-Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer... EXCELLENT, with TS808/Baked mods, best OD pedal you can find ANYWHERE with mods
-MXR Phase 90... Old 1981 model is better than the new ones, the best ever
-Marshall GV-2 Guv'nor, ok pedal 'til I got a Marshall, sold on Ebay.

Hope this is a decent guide, people will probably disagree with me though on my opinions. I am currently only using the NS-2, TS-9, RV-3, BF-2, and Phase 90. The rest that haven't yet been sold are on the block to Ebay I think.
