EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

Wondering if anyone else has subscribed to the Composer Cloud; I am downloading my libraries now. $4k worth of sample libraries for $30/month? Yes, thank you! :)

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

So, what happens if you let your membership expire? Will the virtual instruments stop working? Or is it more a policy of you get to keep whatever you took the time to download? Because if it's the latter that's one helluva deal!

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

You download the libraries, but you cannot access them through Play once your license is up. At this rate, it would take years to match the price outlay if purchased. Plus, I do not own any current gen EW, so this is pure bonus to me.

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

Update: the downloads take AGES. If you NEED the samples, make sure you download with several days to spare, just in case!! I am sure part of it was the fact that I started last night. I stopped the download and will resume tonight.

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

Tempting.. but I already have lots of sample libraries.

If the subscription cost went towards a final purchase after however many years of paying it I would be more interested probably

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

Subscription with a lockout once it expires? Not for me.

Once I buy something, I want to own it free and clear, no BS.

East West is one of the pioneers of sample "ownership".

I wonder if I'd be considered a customer, as I have some of their Giga libraries. :D

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

I think it's a cool offering -- it would just mean you couldn't revisit projects once the membership expires. Sucks that it's so expensive for even one of those sample packs. I'm really interested in the "Ghostwriter" one.

Well, unless you have a Super Computer, you will probably be printing the EW tracks anyway; they eat up a LOT of resources.

Yeah, they are the best, but you really have to pay for them.

I figure it would take about 11 years @ $30/month to equal the outlay for the $4k in samples I got from subscribing.

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

I'm not a fan of subscription services for software products. Adobe's subscription-only format came at a bad time - I was headed to the site to purchase Photoshop, after almost 2 decades of using Paint Shop Pro, because I finally had a need for its more advanced printing features that justified the price. To my dismay, you can't buy a full working version, just the subscription. As Ginormous said; my money, my property. If I spend the money, it's mine forever to be used at any time from now till the day I die. If I choose not to upgrade to a newer version, that's my choice to make. While developers see upgrades as a great thing, it's not always the case for the end-user; had I purchased 3D Studio Max 2012 3 years ago, I could use the available plugins for working with Skyrim models. Since I waited and purchased the 2015 version, that plugin is incompatible due to changes made in the SDK for 2015, which the plugin developer has not adapted to.

Netflix is a video streaming service, not a library of content stored on my computer. Movies are streamed and buffered in a temporary location on my PC for smoother playback. When I installed BFD 2, those samples were placed on my HDD. Big difference.

With all that said, the EastWest stuff has intrigued me for a very long time, and this may be the one time I fall for the monthly subscription trap. I'll have to read the fine print about it.

This is precisely why I happily pay for Spectrasonics software instruments. Stylus RMX still grants me access to vintage sample libraries such as Distorted Reality and Metamorphosis. I have probably been abusing those for twenty five years.

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

Spoke too soon.

After months of hype and a gimmicky countdown to launch, overwhelming customer demand crashed the Spectrasonics server the moment that (notionally) it became available.

Victims of their own success?

They had to have known. Isn't it 50GB or something? They should have gone the torrent route. That way they could spread the load out among all the downloaders.

Re: EastWest Composer Cloud -- anyone take the plunge yet?

Update: downloading the final library right now. Total of the 7 libraries is approximately 100GB.
The download speed is actually fine, but the downloader is essentially broken, or at least doesn't work as advertised. For example, they recommend downloading all of the libraries overnight but I tried that twice and it doesn't work. However, when downloaded one at a time, it works fine and is quite fast. This is the first chance I have had since Tuesday to actually download them in this fashion.

Just relaced the generic Logic EXS synths in a songwriting demo w EW samples ... Great googily moogily! Jaw dropping level of quality here! At first I was a bit nervous that these would obviate my beloved ROMpler synths, but in actuality, these are completely different. There are instances where this level of verasimilitude is welcome, but in some cases I prefer the colorations and hyper-reality of the ROMplers.

I'm sure there's a lot of cool gadgets... but...

...not a fan of cloud anything when it comes to products that you will use constantly.

Yeah, Adobe's is another crap attempt at this format.

**** the cloud! :naughty:

Ha!

Whilst I don't agree, I can certainly empathize with that sentiment!

Unfortunately, I have bad news for ya -- the IoT is going to eliminate virtually ALL mechanicals and aside from a few specialty pieces of equipment (like audio interfaces, and even their days are numbered) no one will own ANYTHING aside from a device or two which will serve as a conduit to mass-shared, un-owned ANYTHING.

A little sample of style. This is just two instances of Symphonic Orchestra.
