Re: EL34s and Clean Tone

yeah, that el-diablo has a nice clean channel but i couldn't get into the gain channel that much. i too have a supersonic and the bassman channel i think is one of hte best. the vibrolux is a little thin, but still sparkly and fender quality clean that you would expect. super sounding amp.

Re: EL34s and Clean Tone

Got a Hiwatt and a Carlsbro, one 200+watt and one about 120-30 watt...Partridge trannies, best clean sound, same with my small EL-84 amp...like those over most US voiced stuff as it is!

Re: EL34s and Clean Tone

interesting you say that because i was checking out some el84 amps yesterday and found some pretty impressive clean tones.

Re: EL34s and Clean Tone

I agree that most of the character of a clean amp comes from the preamp. Regarding differences going from EL34s to 6L6s, I agree with Screamingdaisy. The Road King is a great platform to compare output tube effect on tone, and the difference almost comes down to feel. The 6L6 has that slightly deeper low end and crisper high end, while the EL34 has a slightly looser bass and more 'emphasis' on the mids. Not stronger, but slightly more complex. I think it's when you start pushing tubes that you really tell a difference, but for most cleans I think it really does come down to preamp design.

Re: EL34s and Clean Tone

Sometime I should do a closer comparison of the El Diablo's clean to the SuperSonic's Vibrolux clean and really listen to the lower mids and bass.

Or better yet, put some 6L6's in that El Diablo. That's what I'm running and one day I mean to throw in some EL34's to hear what this amp should sound like stock. My experience with the 6L6's is a very nice clean but also warm and a tad dark, almost like an evil Bassman. I'm having a hard time dialing in spank though. But I'm learning there are so many factors (different guitars, age of strings, amount of time played, volume, etc) that make a huge difference and make the same setup sound totally different on different days. I have to admit that's one thing I like more about solid state. Consistent tone.
