EMGs vs Blackouts

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

Try this. I'm assuming the switches in your Ibanez will look somewhat like this, with the lugs in a row. There may be only 7 lugs, in which case the middle two are internally combined.

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

I've tried EMG 81's and 85's in almost every guitar I've ever had, and the 85 has been my absolute favorite bridge pickup for quite a while.

I just ordered a set of Blackouts, will be trying both in the bridge, posting clips as I go - hopefully this neck pickup will be an 85 with more dynamics, as that'd be puuuurfect for me.

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

Hopefully... an 85 with more dynamics would be perfect.

I'm hoping to like them enough to grab a set of the 7 string ones - I don't care if it requires routing.

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

I'm still saving up some $$ to put blackouts in my explorer. Forget about EMG's...

Somebody (named Evan) correct me if I'm wrong but I think it doesn't! They'll be making two versions (Called phase 1 and 2 I think). One to retrofit an ordinary 7-string bucker and one to retrofit a guitar with EMG-7s. Cool huh?

Evan, I haven't read any Internet rumors, do you mean the Blackouts incorporate the quick connect system or that you can simply take out the EMG and connect the Blackout where the quick connect cable was?

The Emg 85 was my favorite pickup for many years. I like it better in the bridge than the 81 because it has an alnico 5 magnet that keeps the sound warm and fat.

Definately try the blackout neck pickup in the bridge position of your guitar. It is very much like an 85...the blackout bridge pickup is very similar to an 81.

I've tried all combinations of the blackouts over the past few months and my favorite is to run 2x blackout neck pickups...one in the bridge and one in the neck. Sounds great...bluesy and warm in the neck/ jazzy in the middle/ and fat and warm with lots of cut in the bridge.

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

After reading many reviews on the Blackout in comparison to EMGs (on harmony central); it seems to me that most people like both pickups about the same, despite their differences.

I guess this question is too the people who have tried both pickups...

What do YOU THINK are the better pickups; and if you could only choose one; Why would someone chose EMGs over Blackouts? And Vice Versa....

without question the blackouts are BETTER! Duncan has literally taken every bad quality of EMG and fixed it.

I think a lot of people that are EMG guys are used to the compressed feel and unfortunately rely on it's extra noise to cover up their sloppy playing (not everyone, but definately some players are like this). Also, EMGS will make all guitars sound similar so they are great for covering up a cheap piece of tonewood. Emgs usually go well with 300 dollar guitars. Just my opinion...others may think differently

Unlike the EMGS, Blackouts are totally uncompressed and open. They feel like passives and bring out the tone in your guitar's tonewood better. They also bring out the tone in your hands/fingers better. They are ultra quiet too....all of these factors mean that the Blackouts are more UNFORGIVING than Emgs. Because blackouts have less noise, sloppy playing will not be covered up. Because the blackouts are more open, bad tonewood or cheap guitars will not be covered up. Because they are less compressed, they may not vibe with the hands of a sloppier player.

But without question...without a doubt....blackouts are better than EMGS.

However, I can definately understand why a lot of guys will still prefer EMGS. Just to be fair....EMGS have been around a long time and many players have literally built a career on their sound. They are a taste ....people are comfortable with them...so EMGS will probably never get replaced by blackouts (at least not in the near future)

Just my opinion. Others will certainly think differently

The blackouts have a lot more tone to them. They have a beefier tone as opposed to the fuzzy emg tone. I love 'em.

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

I see some other people here have also tried placing the Blackouts in different positions. Since I was a major fan of the EMG-81, I preferred the bridge position Blackouts for both positions. They have the extra booty of an EMG-85 while still retaining the edginess and high end of the 81.

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

Parameter Man, Your schematics didn't work... I had to finally just settle on connecting only the bridge and neck separately in only two positions. I'll get a three way later.

These Blackouts sound Amazing though....

Re: EMGs vs Blackouts

If the internal construction of your switch had matched what I've experienced, it would have worked. If your switch has more than 4 lugs, it's possible to make it work. You'll just have to experiment, preferably with a multimeter.
